      • Stephen: (on President Bush's first veto) Congratulations, Mr. President. I was getting worried — you'd been in office for almost six years, and hadn't done the dirty deed. Now that the first one's out of the way, you're gonna want to do it over and over. You're gonna want to put your pen on anything that looks remotely like legislation.

      • Stephen: The answer is tonight's Word: R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Why don't you give it to Bush, NAACP? African-Americans have never shown the President much love, (It's hard out there for a Prez) right after Katrina his approval ratings among blacks was 2%. (Hurricane got 4%) Kanye West went so far as to say George Bush doesn't care about black people. (Kanye doesn't care about rich white people) Well folks, nothing could be further from the truth. This is they guy who man Colin Powell the first black Secretary of State. (And ruined his chances of being first black President) Now I'm something of an authority on race relations because I am on record as having had a black friend. Now he's just my black acquaintance, we're addressing the situation. (Keep those applications coming!) Anyway, George Bush is no different. But for some reason African-Americans refuse to like him. (Much like other Americans) Now some will say it's because the President is opposed to Affirmative Action, against raising minimum wage, his 2000 campaign disenfranchised black voters in Florida and when hurricane Katrina struck his administration could have done more. (Than watch it on TV) But, you know, Martin Luther King had a dream, a dream that one day a man would be judged not by the color of his skin but by the content of his character. King didn't say anything about the wisdom of his policies. Look NAACP, you don't like President Bush because he never does anything for you, but he never does anything for you because you don't like him. It's a vicious circle. Somebody has to back down, I'm telling you, it's not gonna be the President. (See: Iraq) I hate to say it NAACP, but you're prejudiced. You're pre-judging the President solely based on what he's done, but he could change. (In November 2008) I mean, I'm sure there are aspects of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People that the President agrees with. (Like calling them "Colored") So give him a chance, you don't need to agree with him, you don't need to like him. All he's asking for is a little respect. (And your midterm votes)

        And that's the Word.

    • NOTES (1)

      • When Steven is talking about "not being gay" or in a relationship with his "building manager", the man playing it is Paul Dinello, who on the show Strangers With Candy, played Geoffrey Jellineck, Chuck Noblet(Steven Colbert)'s secret gay lover.
