  • Why on earth would they not do "The Word?!"

    8.3
The show opens with a teaser of content from the show, which involves everything from traditional American values to manners.

Stephen starts off tonight's show by playing a little music, which replaces the show's main theme. Afterwards, Stephen announces tonight's theme, "Home Hearth Heart & Heartland, a Return to Traditional Values." Stephen then mentions how he's been working on a paper mache bust of Michael Landon, when he saw a crazy headline in the newspaper. It seems a middle school seduced a student but she won't spend any time in jail. Also, Stephen shows a few other ridiculous articles pulled from the paper, including the weather map, which is using the wrong colors - where are the red, white, and blue colors?

Stephen then turns his attention to Helen Thomas who questioned President Bush about the war in Iraq, and she interrupted his answer, which upsets Stephen. The issue of brings about a segment on manners, so Stephen welcomes Judith Martin, "Miss Manners," a syndicated columnist. They have a short and at times, funny discussion on what manners are and just how journalists should act.

Back from commercial, we're greeted by a short clip of people on the street debating what a hearth is, which goes along with the theme of tonight's show. Stephen then introduces another segment called "Stephen's Sound Advice." To go with tonight's theme, Stephen dispenses advice on how to raise children. Among the many suggestions, Stephen says that women shouldn't have any interests so they can stay home and raise and school the children, boys should dress in blue and girls in pink, and that kids should be limited to only watching The Colbert Report.

Back from commercial, we're greeted by another short clip from people on the street wondering what the founding fathers would say if they were to see the way things are now today. Stephen then welcomes tonight's guest, John Kasich, from FOX News. The guys have an interesting discussion on values and how they impact politics. Since John has a book coming out in May, he may be back on the show in a few weeks to promote it.

Back from commercial, Stephen ends the show with a few brief statements about values in front of his studio fireplace.

I'm surprised it took 71 episodes to get to one where he did nothing but a show about "traditional" American values. Although I enjoyed tonight's show, none of the segments really stood out as being great. My favorite was probably "Stephen's Sound Advice," but it wasn't enough to make up for the lack of "The Word," which was somehow missing. The interview with Judith Martin was totally unnecessary, and I would have rather seen "The Word" in its place.moreless
