Why I think the colony is stupid in some respects....

Reason #1 In the first place, if a nuclear attack or biological attack happened, people would be in major SHOCK! Some would lose their entire families if they only survived and I doubt very seriously they would be so "care Free" with the attitude the people chosen for this experiment (if you want to call it that) seemed to have. Of course they have that attitude because they know it is only an experiment. THEIR families will be alive and greet them when they are finished with the experiment. But for a real life scenario, it would not be that way! The people who survived would carry around a tremendous amount of mental anguish...coupled with the fact that their entire way of life is now gone! Think about the survivors of families that lost loved ones in 9/11 or katrina disasters. They themselves are still having a hard time coping with those memories and the family members they lost all those years ago. So I doubt very seriously the mental state of survivors on day one would be as good as the ones on this experiment.

Reason #2 If A biological or nuclear attack happened, I doubt very seriously that the "colonists" would have it so easy as to stumble upon a warehouse they could use for shelter as well as have a whole crate full of "harbor freight" power tools inside. Just seems to be too easy.

Reason #3 Then you have to take into consideration the fact that you would have to be extremely lucky to have a group with a doctor, engineer, martial arts specialist, etc. It seems the producers of this show may have thought that those people would come together if they survived, but it seems WAY too convienient to have people with exactly skills you would need to do, mechanical work, welding, plumbing, carpentry, you name it, they seem to have it. So while the show may try to pass this group off as handicapped somehow, I think it is total BS! They might as well have had a survival expert join the group! Because I doubt very seriously that this kind of talent in skills would come together so easily after a real disaster.

Reason #4 IF there WERE a biological attack or a nuclear attack in the US, the water and food supply of a city like los angles WOULD BE CONTAMINATED! And no amount of "homemade filters" would get it out of the water supply! Sorry that is totally false!

Reason #5 IF people were REALLY fighting each other for resources, it would be a "no holds barred" situation. Not this mamby pamby push and shove thing like what you saw in "strangers among us"! IF that had of been real life, someone would be DEAD! And probably the black guy and his girlfriend would have gotten ganged up on and beaten to death for trying the things they tried like hogging resources! And I simply don't buy the explanation that the actors that pose as threats are told not to physically harm the people in the experiment, but the people of the experiment don't know that! I mean come on! Clearly the people in the experiment know the limits of what they should do to, or as I said, there would be someone end up dying on that show! People have been knifed and killed for their shoes in LA! So it is not hard to believe in an actual end of the world scenario, people would act like animals and kill anything that threatened them...even mildly. If anyone hads ever watched the day after, it has a scene where this guy goes home to find squatters on his land and when he tells them that they needed to leave, some guy comes around behind him and blows him away with a shotgun! Now THAT is realistic! Something like that is not only plausable, but probable in a real life end of the world!

So it seems this show leaves a LOT of things out! ( only a few are what I mentioned, there are others) The question that nobody can answer is how bad it would be if a city like Los Angles was destroyed or for that matter most or all of the country or the world. That is a question I don't think anyone can answer....certianly NOT a show that locks up a bunch of highly skilled people in a warehouse area!

Oh and one more thing that is not even real....everyone putting up with mikes BS! If that had of been real life and he mouthed off to people like that, I think I would give him two weeks to live before someone got sick of his mouth and shut him up...permanently!

OK, now I KNOW this show is retarded! Lets see....they get attacked at NIGHT in the last episode of season 1 and barely make it to the truck AT NIGHT..... and they bust through the doors to....DAYLIGHT? Hoew did it turn to daylight so quickly? Because this is all scripted that is HOW, there is no other way it could have happened! You cannot have pitch black night and barely make it to a truck and then break out into daylight, that is just idiotic to think that!

Do the idiots that wrote this fakery really expect that the audience will accept this? Way to go colony...now I KNOW this is not even an experiment, but just a scripted show trying to pass itself off as a reality series! Again, very stupid!

Now on season 2 they get attacked by a gang with a 3 to 1 ratio or more. Seriously, all these survivors can think of for weapons is a pole? How about a GUN???????

If it was the end of the world, nothing would speak louder than that. If I was attacked like they were, I would try to get a gun by looking at every pawn shop or gun store I could get to and if I was lucky enough to get one, I would try to "equalize" the situation. But I guess they have never heard of a gun!

A crowd like that would think twice before attacking someone with a gun in their hand. There is an old saying: the reason most chain gangs don't attack the one or two guards over ten or fifteen men is simple....NO ONE WANTS To DIE FIRST! Sure, they could overpower the guards with guns, but someone would have to be the first to die so that the others could overpower the guards, not many people want to do that. A shotgun is a great "crowd controller".

the show 'the colony' is tryign to give some handles on how to survive when suddenly, there's nothing left. Sure, it could be a nuclear attack or a biological one, but look at the region this show was filmed in, the louisiana area where the flooding was. An actual flood area. How about the earthquake in Haiti? Or the floodings that happened at several times during the history of the world?

So, lets go through your list of complaints.

    1. the knowledge of the group: sure it is hard to believe that a group of people has exactly all the knowledge necessary to survive and escape their predicament. But do not underestimate the shared knowledge of a group of people. Everyone knows a little bit of something, and if they're a bit fuzzy on a particular subject, maybe someone else knows a little bit more to nudge the group knowledge in a particular direction. Story telling time, sharing info. And don't forget there are still books available. Books and knowledge are power in a situation like those people are in. Condensed and stored knowledge.

    2. weapons: defense of yourself and the people you trust is essential. But you don't start out in a well-fortified area with guns and bullets. Well, maybe in america you do, but elsewhere in the world you're basically dependent on sticks and stones from the get-go. So imagine one finds a gun. A gun is useless without bullets, and once you have shot them all, you're left with? Right, sticks.

I agree that the riot suppression gear that they had in season 2 (the water gun, the net gun, the riot shields) were a bit over the top, but the shield and that stick with the wire on it were feasible defense tools, easily made.

    3. fights: this isn't a computer game where when you're down, you'll get up again, lick your wounds and get better. When you're hungry, starving, low on energy, all you can think of is survival, and survival does not include getting yourself killed by something. So I am fairly certain that some kind of stand-off in a battle will occur very fast in a situation like that. Unless one party had a tremendous advantage right from the get-go. But tell me, are you ready to murder someone when that someone is just trying to feed himself? Or are you capable to see that that person might also be something of value to you and your group once they see reason?

You know that back in history when there were no guns as equalizers, battles were fought by bringing armies to a battlefield, and one group would look at the other, and right there and then the generals would decide if they would fight or not just by LOOKING at the size of the army. It wasn't about mindless slaughter of men; that would also be bad for their own people. If however one group was decidedly larger than the other, victory was declared immediately, too. Only when both groups decided they might win, and didn't back out, they would fight.

    4. scripting of the show: well, it is still discovery channel, a place where they want to teach you something. not some action series. So yes, they'll have clean underwear, there'll be quick day/night shifts, and if the cast didn't do something that the writers think the audience should know, it would be edited in later on. Of course you can see cars and planes in the background (even they took great care to edit them out). But the show in its entirety is believable enough.

And maybe, when disaster strikes YOU, and you end up in a situation that you have to survive together with a bunch of strangers without the tools that you're normally used to, maybe you'll think back to this show and get a head start in getting your lives back together to 'standard'.
