Episode 4
AIRED:
Sergeant Giffin is frustrated: he wants to take direct action against the drug dealers up at the Skeetsmoor, but Newlands is playing the waiting game. Giffin grabs his chance when thirteen year old Debbie Sharpe finally ODs. Jaz, keen to be in with CID, hassles her friend Davo for information. Davo, not the brightest of boys, admits that Terry Reynolds, a well-known dealer, is back in town, and has a heroin stash in his house. Whilst Newlands and Stowe are out for the day, Giffin deviously applies for a warrant. To Mel, Debbie was more than a 'Scrote', and is tearful at her death. And Scrotes have feelings too: Davo is devastated at the loss of his friend. During the shift, the scale deal with other pathetic individuals driven to petty crime by poverty and a Kafkaesque system. Nat and Mike pick up a shoplifter - Vinnie Clark - caught trying to steal a Posh Spice doll for his daughter's birthday. And Alison Brennan, with a husband inside and two kids to feed, is arrested for non-payment of fines: 'Six hundred quid - I told them the only way I'm gonna get that kind of money is if I flog me arse. So what do they do? Fine me another 50. Where's the sense in that?'. Even after the successful raid on Reynolds' house (Jaz finds the smack), his wife Sharon gives us the human story: 'Have you ever been skint? I mean really skint? No lecky or gas? Well we have. Till Terry came along. He takes care of us. So if it means me keeping this shut, well...' Reynolds is banged up on remand, but only Roy seems concerned about Davo's welfare; he's the one that will really suffer when Reynolds gets to him. A distraught Davo confronts Jaz - 'My name's shit on that estate now.' But Jaz can't give a shit. At the station, WPC Kennett turns up for an interview. New personnel officer Maggie Hayes sees her for Danny's place without Giffin, who's preoccupied with the raid. And with good reason: Stowe returns tight-lipped to the nick, with the news that Sharon Reynolds has lodged a complaint against them for the injury of her daughter sustained as they entered the premises. Not the outcome Giffin was hoping for.moreless
