It's nice to see some background into Guy's days on the force. In the pilot movie and first episode, he had retired so quickly we really didn't get to learn much about where he had come from. Throwing him a crisis of conscience is nice, especially since it mixes up his status with the police and relationships. I never understood the complaints people made against Bill Cosby's dramatic acting. In this episode (and several others) he is dynamite. No, he never completely sheds his sense of humor, but nobody in life is all serious or ridiculous all the time. His scenes with Russ Bonner in the jail are strong, and he has a great scene where he discusses the guilt he may or may not feel over the conviction with Lynn Whitfield. Ratings may have gotten this show canceled; a lack of quality was certainly not the culprit. Filming in New York gives the locations (the building where the body is found, the construction site) a greater flavor and sense of reality. The script is tight and the denouement is terrific.
On a side note, I love how this show really predates CSI and the obsession with forensics shows. Guy uses his wits and his at-home crime lab every show!moreless
