If it is Thanksgiving, how come Cliff's parents aren't there? That just doesn't make any sense for them not to show up. Especially since Cliff is their only child.
Cliff: Here's your turkey carving practice cabbage.
Theo: Dad, that's a cabbage.
Cliff: Right! You're brilliant!
Cliff: Let me look at you.
Sondra: How do I look?
Cliff: Like trash.
(Cliff is instructing Theo how to carve a turkey.)
Cliff (imitating Julia Child): First, you slice ever so gently along the grain, following the contour of the bird.
Theo: Dad, why are you talking like that?
Cliff (still imitating Julia Child): I have no idea; it's just that it makes me feel more secure when I'm in the kitchen.
Cliff's line, "When Sondra was four, she asked me, 'Daddy, where do the ducks go when the pond freezes over?' That was when I knew she was smarter than I am," is most likely a reference to J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye. Throughout the novel, protagonist Holden Caulfield frequently asks city residents the same question about Central Park's resident ducks.
Another actress considered for the role of Sondra was Suzette Charles, Miss America 1984. Charles had replaced Vanessa Williams as Miss America after Williams was forced to resign her crown in disgrace after appearing in Penthouse.
According to the E! True Hollywood Story, the character of Sondra was added per Bill Cosby's request, as he wanted to show a positive end result of the struggles of raising children, i.e. a child attending college.
Sabrina LeBeauf, who plays Sondra, beat out future pop star Whitney Houston for the role.
This is the first appearance of Sondra, the eldest of the five Huxtable children.
