Episode Summary

EDIT
Russell gets eight tickets to the sold-out Michael Jackson concert from a friend. They are one ticket short of being able to take the whole family, so Clair suggests that she and Cliff babysit and let Sondra and Elvin go to the show. Kenny takes the extra ticket. Elvin is afraid to leave the twins for an evening, but Sondra convinces him that they need to get out. Kenny becomes jealous when Rudy pays extra attention to her appearance in the hopes of attracting Michael. Kenny accuses her of failing to recognize that Kenny is the "real thing," and vows to leave her for Whitney Houston. Clair has to go to work to deal with an emergency after another lawyer becomes ill, leaving Cliff alone with Nelson and Winnie. He tries his best to keep them entertained. He tells them a story about his brother, James Theodore Huxtable, who died of rheumatic fever at the age of seven.moreless

  • But We'd Rather Be At the Concert Instead

    5.0
Russell is the coolest grandpa in the world! He secured tickets for the family to the sold out Michael Jackson concert (Michael was on the second leg of the Bad Tour when this episode aired) however there's not enough tickets for everyone. Cliff and Clair offer to stay home and watch the babies (now 3 months old) and give Sondra and Elvin a night off. Elvin is paranoid he'll miss a major baby development unless he has a video camera glued to his hand. The grandparents rightfully tell him to shut up and "Beat It" to the concert. Then Clair gets called away to the office and Cliff is left alone to ad-lib with the babies. This is cute and very sweet at first, Cliff reveals he had a little brother who died when he was 8, which is fascinating, but his other stand-up bits get boring fast. Wonder how the rest of the family are enjoying themselves at the biggest concert of the century? Plenty of references but no cameo by the greatest entertainer on the planet, not even a stock footage scene. Darn copyrights!

Poignant to watch now in these post-Michael years, especially when Elvin unpacks all the Michael Jackson memorabilia he bought for the babies at the concert: T-shirts, posters, photo, which, at today's eBay prices, might help pay for the twins' college. OK, maybe one of the twins. For the first six months.

    RIP Michael. We love you!moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • After Clair leaves, the scenes with Cliff and the babies do not follow a script. Instead, Bill Cosby ad libs as the babies spit up, and one gets helplessly attracted to the bright studio lighting.

  • QUOTES (2)

    • Cliff: (Talking to the babies)
James was very small, and this kid said "He looks rather sickly", and James punched him in the face. And I look at my brother and he's (Rocking back and forth with a smug look) and I say "GO JAMES!" Anyway, he died and then I was very sad, but he's still with me, he's with me here (Points to heart) and he's going to be with you because I'm going to tell you stories about him.

    • (The babies are looking up, so Cliff looks up)
Cliff: You're going to have to help me out here, what are we looking at?

  • NOTES (2)

    • While talking to the twins, Cliff reveals that he had a younger brother who passed away when Cliff was 8. The brother's name was James Theodore Huxtable, making it obvious Theo was James' namesake.

    • This is the first and only time that that Cliff mentions a sibling. He recalls to the babies a story of his younger brother James Theodore Huxtable who died at age 7. Prior to this it was always assumed that Cliff was an only child and all stories recalling his childhood did not mention a sibling.

  • ALLUSIONS (3)

    • When Cliff shows off his "walk" to the babies, he comments, "Just like Sidney Poitier." Sidney Poitier and Bill Cosby starred in two movies together in the early 70's, "Uptown Saturday Night" and "Let's Do It Again".

    • Beat It

Michael Jackson's song "Beat It" is referenced in this episode. The entire family sings it while walking ou the door and also the words "beat it" are said when someone is told to leave.

    • Russell: We love Michael Jackson. He's bad!

Bad is song by Michael Jackson. It is one of the most popular songs from the 1980s.
