Episode Summary

EDIT
Denise and Martin prepare to drive to Rhode Island to check out the house where they will be living on the naval base. Clair notices that Denise seems troubled. She confesses that she forgot to call the base and confirm the housing arrangement while Martin was away at sea. Clair encourages Denise to tell Martin the truth immediately, but she is too afraid. She does not tell him until they are called before the head of the base, causing Martin to look like a fool in front of the captain. They have to go back on the waiting list, and must make other arrangements for six months. He feels bad about continuing to impose on Cliff. They cannot stay with Martin's parents because his mother thinks that Denise is a flake. Cliff spends time with Olivia while Martin and Denise are away. She offers her theory about the origin of babies. When Denise and Martin return, he takes the blame for the housing snafu. Clair suspects that Denise screwed up on purpose because she was worried about having to care for Olivia on her own and wanted her family nearby. Clair tells Denise that she must eventually learn to take responsibility for her family; but assures her that she can always call on Clair for help.moreless

    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    FILTER BY TYPE

    • TRIVIA (5)

      • Obviously a plot device so Denise would stay in New York, the "not getting Naval housing" was a bit contrived. If there really were no quarters available on the Newport Naval Base, the Navy would have given Martin and Denise an adequate housing allowance so they could live off-base in an adjacent city in Rhode Island.

      • Rudy and Vanessa are preparing to go to the mall and ask Olivia if she wants to come. She says yes but changes her mind when Cliff comes home from the hospital and she decides to stay with him. What I want to know is who was going to look after Olivia if Rudy and Vanessa didn't ask her to go to the mall. They MUST have been in charge of her because they said no one else was going to be home and Cliff could relax in peace.

      • Not exactly a goof, but when Martin explains to Cliff that he, Denise, and Olivia will have to live there another 6 months, he says, "But I insist on paying you full rent," which Cliff refuses. We know Martin is bluffing, because if he were really willing and able to pay full rent, he'd get his family an apartment of their own instead of continuing to impose on Cliff.

      • Denise states that Olivia is four years old, but in the episode The Birthday Party, it is said that Olivia is turning four.

      • Olivia's voice sounds unusually high-pitched in this episode.

    • QUOTES (1)

      • (The Admiral has just told Martin and Denise that there is no housing for them on the base, and Denise confesses not calling to confirm.)
Martin: You FORGOT to confirm the housing?
Admiral: That's what I told you!
Martin: Sorry, sir. I'm taken off guard. Denise, I told you!!
        Denise: I know. I'm sorry.
Admiral: Would you like me to leave you two alone?

    • NOTES (2)

      • This is the first time that Martin informs Denise that his mother dislikes her. This would be further explored in the episode Grampy and Nu-Nu Visit the Huxtables.

      • Denise states that Olivia is four years old, but in the episode The Birthday Party, it is said that Olivia is turning four.
