Episode Summary

Cliff is ecstatic as the first day of school arrives. Vanessa, who took summer school courses and graduated high school a year early, leaves for Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. Denise begins her first semester at Medgar Evers, while Olivia enters preschool. Rudy becomes nervous about her first day of the sixth grade and refuses to leave her room. She confesses to Cliff that she is upset about the fact that she doesn't have breasts yet. He cheers her with a story about his youth and convinces her that her personality, intelligence and smile are what matters. She is prepared to go to school--until her friend Margie, who "developed" over the summer, appears at the door. Rudy's friend Amy brings over a cream that will supposedly enhance their bust within 48 hours. Clair tells Rudy that she shouldn't worry about the reactions of boys her age, as they laugh at everyone whether they have breasts or not. ("They're dumb," she explains succinctly.) She convinces Rudy to toss the cream and go to school. Cliff and Clair have a few moments of peace and quiet, until Theo returns from his trip to Europe. Rudy comes home in a much better mood, as most of the girls in her class have yet to develop.moreless

Who was the Episode MVP ?

  • I liked this episode.

I thought this was a great episode. A lot of young girls go through what Rudy is going through in the episode, and it's good to show that they aren't the only ones. It's ridiculous to think this episode is wrong..we live in the year 2006, get over it! I especially liked the quote where Cliff says "I'm a gynecologist and you wanna talk to a lawyer!"! Haha it's so funny! The whole episode was incredible and really entertaining. I'm really glad they decided to make a show like this and I'm sure young girls out there agree with me.moreless
  • Sickening to a devoted fan.

I am a devoted Cosby fan. There is nothing I wouldn't do for that smart man. His quips keep me entertained for hours after he says them. But this episode crossed the line.

Rudy, the former ankle biter of the family, is growing up - and wishing that she was growing out! To watch this was truly a painful expereince. I had to take a shower and go to church two times extra during the week I viewed this episode just to shake off the image of sad Rudy's eyes staring up at her father, wishing she only had a well endowed chest. This was truly a pain to watch, and I hope that all of you do not have to suffer through it.

I orignally watched this with my wife and kids, and to hear the taboo word breasts on family television was shocking. That was not the way my youngest, my 14-year-old daughter, was supposed to learn what that word is!

Bill, I forgive you for this. But as for Rudy, I hope that she's ashamed of herself for polluting the WGN airwaves with such filth.

    Thank You And Godspeed.

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • In this episode, Denise says that Olivia is starting preschool for the first time. However, in Live and Learn, isn't Olivia in preschool with Uncle Wilton?

  • QUOTES (3)

    • Cliff: (after sniffing Rudy's "bust-enhancing" cream) Maybe I shouldn't have done that. It might make my nose grow.

    • Rudy: "This cream will give me a whole new chest by Wednesday, so if you'll just excuse me for a day and a half!"
      (Cliff smells the cream.)
Cliff:"I think you'd have the same results if you rubbed mayonnaise on your chest."

    • (Rudy is self-conscious about going through puberty.)
Cliff: Do you want to talk about it?
Rudy: Dad, this is woman's stuff. I really think I should talk to Mom.
Cliff: I'm a gynecologist, and you want to talk to a lawyer?

  • NOTES (5)

    • When this episode originally aired, it included an opening scene where Cliff (Bill Cosby) is working at his desk in the bedroom and Olivia (Raven-Symone) knocked on the door and walked inside wearing a Bart Simpson mask. He says to her afterward "Now cut that out!" This scene was in response (accepting the challenge) to the Fox network's decision to move The Simpsons, its first big hit series to Thursday night to compete against The Cosby Show in the battle for ratings. This scene does not appear in syndication.

    • The 7th season opening credits are exactly the same as the 6th seasons (as explained above). However, there are a few differences. Erika Alexander is credited, but not seen. Also in the 6th season, Bill Cosby shouts, "This is the best elevator music I've ever heard!" In the 7th season version, he does not.

    • The producers during the last season decided to use a mural entitled "Street of Dreams," painted by inner-city youth from the Creative Arts Workshop in Harlem, for the 7th season opening credits. The producers discarded the idea when their lawyers said that in order to use the mural they would first have to get permission from all 63 young artists. Instead, the show developed its own mural which combined some of the elements and used many of the colors of the actual one. The owners of the mural threatened to sue and denounced the show for ripping off the children. Carsey Werner was negotiating a settlement with Creative Arts Workshop, but Bill Cosby decided to replace the theme with the 6th season opening credits. Only four episodes featured the original opening credits, and only a few cities saw this version.

    • Throughout this entire season, Cliff wears a pin reading "SD." The pin is worn in tribute to Sammy Davis Jr., who died in 1990. Davis Jr. made a special guest appearance in the fifth season episode No Way, Baby.

    • Sabrina LeBeauf, Geoffrey Owens and Joseph C. Phillips do not appear in this episode. Erika Alexander joins the cast as Pam Tucker, but her character has yet to be introduced on the show. The opening is the same as season 6, with Alexander's name added in a credit at the end of the sequence.
