During the season seven episode, "The Last Barbecue," the viewers learn that Sondra was in labor with the twins during this episode for eight and a half hours.
It's difficult to believe that Cliff wouldn't have known or suspected that Sondra was going to have twins being that he is an obstetrician gynecologist.
Dr. Taylor: Congratulations, you are the grandparents of a healthy boy.
(Cliff and the other adults cheer)
(Cliff and Dr. Taylor shake hands)
Dr. Taylor: And a girl!
(the other adults stop cheering and react)
Clair: Two babies?
Dr. Taylor: Yes. Two babies, better known as twins.
Francine: A boy and a girl?
Dr. Taylor: Boy: 5 pounds, 10 ounces. Girl: 5 pounds, 12 ounces.
Lester: What, you already knew about this?!
Dr. Taylor: Months ago, when we saw it on the sonogram. You see, Sondra and Elvin wanted it to be a surprise for you.
Clair: I just don't know about this "Grandma" business. They should think of another name for us like "Second mother", or "Mother once removed".
Francine: "Experienced mother".
Clair: "Solid gold mother".
Francine: How about "Mother: the sequel". (Both quietly approve as the others come to see the babies)
Sondra: I'm just...looking forward to every day I'm going to get to spend with them.
Cliff: Yeah. That's so wonderful. Spoken just like a woman whose children are only 45 minutes old.
(After Sondra thanks Cliff for being such a good father to her)
Cliff: Good parents are made by good children!
(After Kara speaks rapidly, without stopping)
Kenny: I hope you don't eat like you talk.
Kenny: I'd never let a woman type my paper. She should be cooking my dinner.
On the original one-hour format, the end credits feature the opening credit music (by The Oregon Symphony Orchestra). When shown in two-part syndicated format, the regular season 5 closing music is used.
The twins are named after Nelson Mandela and his then-wife, Winnie.
