Vanessa and some friends decide to audition for drum major in the hopes of becoming the first girl in school history to receive this honor. Vanessa's audition goes well, but the judges award the position to a guy who dropped his baton twice. Theo discovers that three of his friends were the judges. They admit that they had no intention of picking a girl. Theo complains to the principal, who orders new tryouts with even numbers of male and female judges. Vanessa believes that the new tryouts were ordered because word got out about her ability, so Theo keeps quiet about his involvement. Russell learns that his old friend Slim Claxton is in town for a gig. He and Cliff go to the club to visit Slim, and Russell tries to convince Slim to accept repayment for the money he once loaned him for an engagement ring. Slim refuses, as a fortune teller had told him that he could receive good luck if he gave someone money, and he has been happy ever since that day. Russell tells Cliff that the fortune teller was a notorious scam artist. He tries to slip some money into Slim's pocket after he comes over to try Cliff's "ding dong eight-alarm chili." Vanessa arrives home and announces that she didn't make drum major because a six-foot-three girl showed up at the last minute. Slim cheers her up by giving her Russell's hundred dollars.
