Episode Summary

EDIT
Cliff surprises Clair by showing her plans for an addition to the house, a soundproof room where she could be free from the children and their demands. Cliff and Clair co-sign a loan for Sondra and Elvin to help them secure financing on their new house. Elvin suffers a panic attack after the papers are signed as he thinks about just how much money he will have to spend each month. Cliff tries to calm him by reminding him that he and Sondra are both successful professionals. Sondra and Elvin complete the final paperwork and move out of their apartment. Unfortunately, the couple selling the house suddenly files for divorce, complicating the sale and leaving the Tibideauxs homeless. They plead with Cliff and Clair to let them stay in the Kendalls' bedroom while Denise and Martin are in Japan. They lay it on thick, talking at length about the sleazy motel where they will otherwise stay and having the twins trudge sadly across the living room. Cliff and Clair let them stay, but abandon the idea of Clair's room because they feel they can never escape the children. They later decide to build an addition for the kitchen.moreless

  • Oh selfishness abounds in the episode, and it isn't very pretty.

I just finished watching the episode in syndication and I think it's one of my least favorites of the series. On one hand, it's really cute with Cliff planning to build Clair an extra room, a much deserved and needed room. Every kid is selfishly demanding their attention, and I like the way Cliff immediately lays down the law of the new house extension is solely "Your Mother's room!!" No kids allowed. But all of this is overshadowed by what Sondra and Elvin pull, bullying Cliff and Clair into letting them and their children stay in the already overcrowded Huxtable house. It only strengthened my view of especially Elvin being one of the most annoying characters ever on tv.

This shows how cowardly Elvin is for when there's trouble with getting the new house, he can't buck up and be the head of his family, nope, he has to impose on his inlaws for support. What about his own parents? Both he and Sondra stoop to using their own kids to get their way to stay with Cliff and Clair. Then they even come up with an arrangement where they can get a bedroom to themselves. Family can be family, I know, but they shouldn't take advantage and be bullies with other members, especially the parents.moreless

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • Goof: Early in this episode, as one of the couples walks through the kitchen door into the living room, you can see a crew member's hand on the door pulling it closed.

    • Olivia, when you first see her, she is wearing Japanese wooden shoes. When she goes into the bathroom with everyone else, she's wearing blue slippers. Why the change of footwear?

    • When Cliff and Clair are in their room, you can look out their window and see trees! But their house and all the houses on their street are connected, so how could there be a tree on the side of their house?

  • NOTES (1)

    • This is one of the few season 8 episodes to have "blinking" end credit animation during the montage. The majority of the season 8 end credits are scrolling upward during the montage (this includes the series finale).
