Episode Summary

EDIT
Rudy and her friends are determined to get into a 16-and-over club to see a birthday performance by rapper JT Freeze. They also hope to win a drawing and get to dance with him. Rudy tries to con her parents into letting her go by claiming that they will be going to a cultural center. Cliff and Clair learn the truth about the club from Lance, Pam and Charmaine. They admit that it is common for junior high kids to frequent the establishment; and explain that the only real threat comes from "old heads"--men in their late teens or early twenties who hit on the younger girls because they can't get women their own age. Cliff and Clair agree to pay the teens to go to the Exchange in disguise and keep an eye on Rudy. Lance scares away one of the "old heads" who repeatedly approaches the bewildered Rudy, Susan and Danielle. Pam ends up winning the dance with JT. She introduces him to the girls, who make fools of themselves. Rudy and her friends are forced to work at a retirement home as punishment for their deception, while Pam, Charmaine and Lance party with JT at his hotel.moreless

  • Probably one of the better episodes from the last two seasons.

    8.4
J.T. Freeze (more than likely a spoof of M.C. Hammer; this was 1991 after all) comes to the Big Apple for a birthday celebration. Rudy and her friends, Susan and Danielle, all have a crush on this guy; so they naturally want to try to meet him. The only problem, where's it at. The Exchange (an "underage" club where no alcohol is served). So Rudy concocts what has to be one of the weirdest lies I've ever heard from a TV kid (claiming it's the Cultural Exchange and was a place where they would, among other things, study the Bible). Cliff and Clair, on the other hand, seem to have caught on early and enlist Pam, Charmaine and Lance to "do surveiliance" (read: spy) on them. From there, Charmaine points out the potential for some "old-heads" (about 19-20) hitting on some of the junior-high kids (such as Rudy and her posse).

Inside, Pam, Charmaine and Lance are watching the girls (all in rather ridiculous disguises) as Rudy's posse anticipate J.T.'s arrival. Meanwhile, Pam gets hit on by one of the aforementioned "old heads", but manages to ward him off by holding a bottle (contents unknown, but looked suspiciously like a beer bottle) as if she would break it on him. So the guy moves on...to Rudy and the gang with the usual array of pick-up lines (ex.: using a line from Lionel Richie's "Once, Twice, Three Times a Lady"), and proceed further to delve into an almost J.J. Evans-like display of immaturity while showing some rather weird dance moves. Lance (bad Jamaician accent and all) shows up asking for lessons when the old head wants to go after them, then Lance pulls out his inner Fred Sanford ("...before you dance with those three, these TWO {fists} wanna cut it").

Anyway, J.T. arrives, does his rap (including a line that he wasn't expecting); resulting in Pam winning and getting to dance with him. And as if the girls' humiliation wasn't complete, J.T. notices Susan's eyelash fell off.

Perhaps the funniest episode from the Pam era that sank the show during the final two seasons, though (more in line with the wild 1989-90 dream sequence episodes) it was more belly-laugh oriented.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • The last word that Cliff spells out is "XELFER." Flipped around, it spells the word that it was originally supposed to be, "REFLEX."

    • Why would Pam call "old head dudes" guys who are 19-20 years age, when she's a senior in high school (approximately 17-18) and they would only be a year or two older than her? Besides, the club was an underage club and 19-20 year olds would not be able to go to a real bar because they would be under 21, so it makes sense they go to this club. If anything, the club should have carded Rudy and friends.

  • QUOTES (3)

    • Cliff: What IS The Exchange Club?Lance: It's just this wack club...
Cliff: Uh, what?Lance: It's wack, that means it's like, ridiculous! It's this little ol' nothin' club where, like, you're supposed to be 16 to get in, but the little junior high school kids, you know, they dress up, try to look older, and they let 'em in, too! But, you know, they're basically good kids tryin' to sneak out on their parents and they jus'...OHHHH...I ain't in this!Cliff: Well, you are now!

    • Chill: Excuse me, my fair lady, do you know CPR?
      Pam: Why?
Chill: 'Cause you may just stop my heart.
      Pam: You gotta be kidding.
Chill: The only thing I gotta be is by your side.

    • Charmaine: (proudly admiring her watch) Look what JT Freeze gave to me.
Lance: Man, he flung that at you to save his arm.
