Episode Summary

Guess Who's Coming for Lunch?
Eddie wants to invite his new, fatherless friend, Max, over for the weekend. He plays matchmaker for Tom, suggesting that he invite Max's mother, Betty, over for dinner as she drops Max off. Eddie feels she would make a great date for Tom, as she is beautiful, and a "full-grown mother" who is "already broken in". Tom agrees to be set up on this blind date, and invites over both Max and Betty. When Max and his mom arrive at their apartment, however, Tom is surprised to find that Betty is not what he expected.moreless

    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    • TRIVIA (1)

      • When Tom is explaining to Eddie that he doesn't want him to be unhappy because he and Eddie can't spend all their time together, Brandon flubs his reply: "I don't - ah - (hesitation) want me to be unhappy, either."

    • QUOTES (4)

      • Eddie (to Max, telling him his dad and Max's mom are probably talking about them):
"When parents get together it's different than people getting together. 'Cause when parents get together, they talk about their kids."

      • Betty and Tom, talking about the only two Japanese words Tom knows - "wakata" and "sionara":
        Betty: "What do they mean?"
        Tom: " 'I understand', and 'good-bye.'"
Betty "Maybe that's all one needs."

      • Mrs. Livingston (to Tom, when Tom prepares a romantic atmosphere for a blind date):
"A smart eagle hides its claws."

      • Eddie (to Tom, on how he can tell whether ladies are bad or nice):
"Just look at their eyes. It's a dead give-away."

    • NOTES (7)

      • Tom assumes that ladies know nothing about football. Betty proves him wrong, however.

      • Betty notices that there are no pictures of Tom's wife in the apartment. Tom tells her that it is too soon (after the death of his wife). Eddie has a picture of her in his wallet, however. It is a photo of her not smiling, because Tom told him that his mom was not happy up in heaven without him.

      • Norman strapped himself under a helicopter in order to get a certain shot.

      • Betty is a fashion model, as was Lynn, Tom's girlfriend from Episode 3.

      • The opening "Peanut" sequence is from the original movie version of The Courtship of Eddie's Father. Eddie tells his father that he has figured out from comic books that bad ladies have squinty eyes and big chests, and nice ladies have round eyes and medium chests. There is a reference to this in the scene in Tom's bedroom. After Tom comes home from a date, Eddie asks Tom if the lady had squinty eyes.

      • A few measures of Little Cowboy are heard during the scene in Tom's bedroom.

      • Songs written and sung by Nilsson. Music score composed by Nilsson and George Tipton.

    • ALLUSIONS (1)

      • (title of episode 7): Guess Who's Coming for Lunch?
This title is a reference to the 1967 movie, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? starring Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, and Sidney Poitier.
