The Crown Prince

Show Summary

The Crown Prince is a 2006 television mini series from Austria directed by Robert Dornhelm. It tells the tragic story of the Crown Prince Rudolf of the Austro-Hungarian throne, as played by Max Von Thun. Rudolf is against his arranged marriage and begins an affair with the baroness Mary Vetsera (played by Vittoria Puccini). In doing this he angers his father, the Emperor, Franz Joseph (played by Klaus Maria Brandauer). Rudolf and Mary's love is doomed however, and they end up committing suicide together in a castle in Mayerling. The mini series puts great emphasis on the confusing and convoluted politics and military practices of the Austro-Hungarian empire, suggesting that these things may have contributed to Rudolf's suicide and dreadful relationship with his father. Rudolf wanted to respect the many cultures of the Empire and planned to retreat from earlier military treaties with Germany, instead siding with France. This is the exact opposite of what his father the Emperor wants and believes.moreless
