  • Finally, I found something by John Oliver that I actually really like...

Although the entire episode was great, my review will focus on John Oliver's mockumentary. It was absolutely fantastic. It doesn't paint any political party in any way. It just elucidates the fact that it feels like the media, in an attempt to garner support or relay their opinions, more than happenings, have a very short memory and don't trust their audiences to have more longevity in that arena. It also goes to show that it is perception that rules the roost. Under the mantra of 9/11 and because of the ideology of fear that seems to be part and parcel to every speech by Bush, we can justify Iraq and justify the role of the U.S. as a police force. I myself remain torn about this global position that we hold and debate with myself the real righteousness of it. However, the Iraq war is something that is sold b/c of it's relation to terrorists. In helping with the Kosovo brawl, however, this war could not be sold to the American public b/c we felt divided from it. Can I tell you? We still feel divided from the Iraq war. My students don't understand the real reasons why we're there or that we're really even there and that it's costing us millions of dollars and many HUMAN lives, not just American lives.

Anyway, excellent episode and, by far, the best John Oliver bit to date.moreless

    • (Discussing the Fox documentary on President Bush)
Jon Stewart: What, John, is the purpose of the documentary?
John Oliver: Well, simply put, to judge the President before history gets its chance.
(Shows a clip from the documentary)
Fox Journalist: From the beginning, George W. Bush has been frequently ridiculed for his speaking style. Now, seven years later, he's credited with some of the most eloquent and visionary speeches ever delivered by an American president.
Jon Stewart: Who has credited him with that?
John Oliver: Well, that guy, just now, the guy on TV. You just saw him. Fox understands a man's legacy is defined not by what he does but by what people on television say he does. Because Fox's legacy is so intertwined with the presidents, I thought, at the very least, they too deserve their own documentary.
      (Shows John Oliver's mockumentary)
