      • Jon Stewart: What's with the hard hat?
Rob Corddry: It's just a law, Jon. Everyone in Alaska has to wear a hard hat.

      • (Talking about BP's oil pipeline.)
Jon Stewart: Can't they repair this thing without shutting the whole thing down? Can't they use some sort of a shunt?
Rob Corddry: Sorry? Shunt, Jon? What is that one of the words you picked up at Sarah Lawrence College for quilting and ovulation?

      • Lewis Black: Mid-Term primaries. Are there two more uninspiring words in politics? Yes there are: Joe Lieberman. Tonight Connecticut's most circumcised Senator faces the fight of his political life in the Democratic primary. Lieberman's in trouble because he's hawkish on Iraq and at last year's State of the Union he was caught in a red hot two-way with the President of the United States! Geez! Why don't you two just get married!? Oh, right. Lieberman's opponent Ned Lamont distributed campaign buttons with pictures of the happy couple. Lieberman shot back with his own button showing him being embraced by Bill Clinton. Lamont upped the ante with this image of Joe going under the shirt over the bra on Kay Bailey Hutchinson! Suffice to say Lieberman had no response. But he isn't the only high profile nominee facing backlash from his own party.

There's also Katherine Harris, the Florida Republican who's vowed to stay in the Senate race despite her latest setback. A letter from the state GOP saying: "Though it causes us much anguish, we have determined that your campaign faces irreparable damage. We feel that we have no choice but to revoke our support." Come on! In a party with this guy [Tom Delay] this guy [Rick Santorum] and this guy [Bill Frist] this guy's unacceptable!? She put your party in the White House! Throw her a bone!

But of course some issues transcend party politics. Ohio Republican Senator Mike DeWine wanted to prove he was strong on national security so he dropped the smoldering Trade Towers into his campaign ads. Only DeWine decided to digitally add smoke to the South Tower for the ad. Because apparently someone in his campaign office saw the actual 9/11 footage and thought it need more oomph. Man, I remember a time when attack ads simply implied that your opponent was either gay, or let a black man out of prison to rape a white woman. Those were the days.
