  • Extreme measures not far out of the current spectrum of reality.

    8.7
This was the first episode I had ever seen of The Dead Zone, and it got me hooked on the series. The idea of a school pricipal going to such extreme measures in order to insure the safety of "his school" does not sound far removed from many security measures currently in place. The most poignant moment of the show was when we meet the shooter -- who is only 10 years old. To look at that little boy, who is still so innocent, tugged at my heart. The moral of the episode was simple: pay attention to what is going on with the younger generation... make sure they get what they need so we can avoid being scared of them in the future.moreless

  • QUOTES (2)

    • Johnny: Yeah, I got kicked out of school once. My friends and I put out an unauthorized student newspaper. It was called the Cleavage Mills Gazette.

    • Johnny: I can't rule her out, either.
      Rowlin: Why?
Johnny: She likes burning pictures of her ex-boyfriends.
      Rebecca: Well, I did that.

  • NOTES (4)

    • There were two alternate endings for this episode: 1) Derek holds his empty hands up as Johnny checks his pockets and shows the guards the cell phone. The guards and the principal look ashamed. 2) Derek freezes after Johnny yells at the guards to stop. He slowly pulls out a cell phone and says he just wanted to call the principal. The principal is shocked and ashamed.

    • In the story's wrap up on the USA Network site, there is a short account of the aftermath of the shooting. The account states that Fitz lived at the end of the shooting, but the USA synopsis says he died. On screen it is left vague.

    • The USANetwork site lists Robert Iler's character as "Derek Rankin," even though their episode wrap-up and the fake news article correctly refer to him as "Derek Fitz."

    • The wrap-up at the USANetwork site refers to a parent-teacher meeting that occurs after the bomb is discovered, that we don't see on-screen.

  • ALLUSIONS (1)

    • Charles Kolchak: Character Name
One of the fathers, "Charles Kolchak," bears a pretty similar resemblance in name to supernatural investigator and reporter Carl Kolchak, played by Darren McGavin in two 70s TV movies and a short-lived TV series.
