Episode Summary

EDIT
While helping to track down a runaway, Jill, who is involved with drugs, Johnny is exposed to a drug that causes him to start getting weird (weirder than usual) visions. He insists on trying to find Jill, despite the concerns of Bruce and Sarah. Confusing matters further is that Jill's boyfriend is in trouble with his supplier. The boyfriend gets killed and Jill and Johnny go on the run. In the final showdown, Johnny manages to fight past his hallucinations and knock the drug dealer off a high ledge, while Jill is reunited with her mother.moreless

  • Creepy.

    9.0
That's pretty much the best word I can use to describe this ep - creepy. Which is good - that's obviously what they were going for. The bad trips through the woods, the use of metaphor (especially with the cougar), and the sheer imagination it must have taken to figure out what Johnny's "dead zone on drugs" must be like were very impressive and very well done. I especially liked the people at the dance being transformed into trees in the woods - I've never done drugs, and yet I could actually feel what it must be like to go through a bad trip. Very well done.moreless
  • Johnny's Brain on Drugs!

    6.9
Johnny helps Walt re-locate a missing teen whose gotten mixed up with the wrong crowd and her life is now in danger.

During his search for her he is gaslighted by the street drug special K which affects his dead zone in an amazing way: he is having hallicinations and can't tell which vision is real and which is false.

I liked this episode, it gave us a different view at how Johnny's mind worked, and what could happen if comes in contact with the wrong kind of drug.

    Overall, a decent episode.moreless

  • TRIVIA (0)

  • QUOTES (8)

    • Bruce: Doctor Tran mentioned that he was concerned about you.
Johnny: And he sent you to check up on me?
Bruce: I sent me to check up on you. A mind-altering drug in the world's most altered mind...that's a scary combination.

    • Tammy: I need a cigarette.
Walt: There's no smoking in the building.
      Tammy: My mom's smoking.
Walt: (over the intercom) Deputy Shoenfled, you have a woman breaking the law three feet away from you.

    • Jill: Hey, I brought something else... when I was a kid my mom used to read this to me when I was sick in bed... now I'm going to read it to you. (Jill shows Johnny the book: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland)
Johnny: My favorite. After this we can sing a few choruses of "Puff the Magic Dragon"...

    • Johnny: (referring to Jill's intuition)
      You're good at this.
Jill: You've never done drugs before...?
Johnny: Well, a long time ago, once. But, I didn't inhale.

    • Johnny: We need to find my friends... they're chasing me...
Jill: I think you mean they're chasing me.
Johnny: No, see, I stole a car and knocked one of them over some garbage cans... and my old girlfriend who's married to the sheriff was tracing me by satellite through my cell phone...
      Jill: Sssh. Slow down.
      Johnny: Was I talking fast?
      Jill: Uh yeah...
Johnny: See what happens when you do drugs.

    • Bruce: This is Johnny's dead zone. This is Johnny's dead zone on drugs. Scrambled eggs, baby.

    • Johnny: Okay, one of my visions was a little off...
Bruce: 'A little off'. Do you understand what it means in the context of the rest of humanity for your brain to be 'a little off'? That puts you in another galaxy far, far away.

    • Dr. Tran: Johnny, as a neurologist, there's only one thing I know less about than the brain.
      Johnny: What's that?
      Dr. Tran: Your brain.

  • NOTES (2)

  • ALLUSIONS (6)

    • Alice in Wonderland
Louis Carroll was a devoted opium user in the days when it was popular. It's suspected that much of the tale was written in an opium haze.

    • Johnny: After this we can sing a few choruses of Puff the Magic Dragon.
Refencing the children's melody written by Peter Yarrow in 1961 and performed by the musical trio of Peter, Paul and Mary.

    • Bruce: This is Johnny's dead zone. This is Johnny's dead zone on drugs. Scrambled eggs.
Reference to the much-recognized "This is your brain on drugs" ad that was on TV several years back.

    • Bruce: For your brain to be... a little bit off; it puts you in another galaxy, far far away.
This is from the beginning of Star Wars - "A long long time ago in a galaxy far far away."

    • Jill: Hey, I brought something else... when I was a kid my mom used to read this to me when I was sick in bed... now I'm going to read it to you.
This line is almost verbatim from the movie The Princess Bride, in which a grandfather reads a story to his sick grandson.

    • Johnny: but I didn't inhale....
When Johnny says this, it's an obvious nod to Bill Clinton. When evidence came up during his campaign that he had smoked marijuana, he admitted that he did it a long time ago, once, but he didn't inhale.
