  • A young man takes the rap for a crime actually committed by his brother-in-law, not realising how badly a short prison term will affect him.

This was a terrifying episode in its day. It does suffer from making its protagonist (a fine performance by Dean Stockwell) too simon-pure; the attack on the destructiveness of the prison system would have been more effective if the character had actually been guilty of something. We are still appalled, though, as, bit by bit, the young man's confidence is destroyed and he finds himself entirely unable to cope with the corruptions of life inside. At the end of the episode, even though he has a relatively short time left in jail, he is calmly awaiting his own death - it will, he says, be passed off as a tragic accident, but really, he'll be murdered.moreless
