If I remember rightly, Don Gordon won an Emmy, or maybe some other award, for his performance in this well-remembered episode, which affected many viewers greatly. There is a gradual sense of encroaching hopelessness in this gruelling two-part story, and, true to the high standards of this series, it does not opt for a sentimental conclusion. "The Defenders" was one of the very few series on TV in the early sixties willing to go for bleakness in place of compromise - one reason why it ought to be more widely available for viewing now. One hoped for more fine work from Don Gordon, but this was perhaps his finest hour.moreless
