  • An irresponsible young woman badly injures a boy in a hit-and-run accident. Then, for religious reasons, the boy's parents refuse to allow an operation and he dies.

This was the second episode of "The Defenders" to be shown in Britain, over 45 years ago now. The first show had been a straightforward murder mystery, not unlike an episode of "Perry Mason" (if less corny), but this one was more typical of "The Defenders" as we would come to know it. Is it the silly woman driving the car who is responsible for the boy's death, or is it his family, whose unusual beliefs make them decline the vitally-needed operation? The show does not so much reach a decision as debate an issue. We can make up our own minds. Evans Evans, the oddly-named actress playing the driver, was the wife of director John Frankenheimer.moreless
