  • Should a lawyer continue to give his client the best defence available if he believes that client to be guilty?

    8.5
Martin Balsam, a fine actor, appeared several times on this show in different roles, but the most memorable was this first one, playing a lawyer who's been caught out in shady dealings and faces disbarment. He retains the Prestons to defend him, insisting the while that it's all a terrible mistake, but it isn't long before they come to the inescapable conclusion that he's up to his neck in corruption. But in a democracy, surely, he's still entitled to be defended to the very best of his attorneys' ability? At the end, the Prestons are uncomfortably aware that they've succeeded in getting a guilty man off, and that he'll cheerfully continue with his crimes. This had never happened on a TV lawyer show before - only in real life.moreless
