The admired British actor Leo Genn, remembered for his performances in such films as "Quo Vadis?" and "Moby Dick", is well cast as a somewhat supercilious doctor, the "colossus" of the title. When he is arrested for murder, his main concern is getting back to his research, which appears to be vitally important. If he dies in the electric chair, he claims, then the breakthrough he's so close to finding will not be made, and thousands, maybe millions, who might have been saved by his cure will instead die. What, he argues, is the life of one murder victim against so many? But playing God is a dangerous game, and the Prestons will not let him play it. A trenchant account of egotism's relationship with immorality.moreless
