  • A fascistic student with contempt for democracy is accused of ordering the brutal beating of a fellow-student who had argued with him.

Taking Voltaire's dictum to heart, the Prestons agree to defend a young man whom they heartily detest - a "campus Hitler who may have ordered a vicious beating after being heckled by a liberal student (now facing prolonged hospitalisation). The right of free speech gets a good discussion, and the episode makes few excuses for the young fascist, played by Ben Piazza - we learn that he was spoiled by his doting mother and beaten by his dimwit father, but these things hardly excuse his loathsome attitudes, given his high intelligence. He's pretty thoroughly nasty. The various arguments are presented rather too slickly, though - the show isn't as disturbing as it might have been, or as complex as the series was at its best.moreless
