  • Can the conviction of a woman who's killed her brute of a husband be called justice, or is it just legalised revenge?

    8.0
The woman on trial is surnamed Harrow, and harrowing is the word for this deeply disturbing episode, one of the first TV dramas I can recall which dealt with the problem of domestic violence. Our hearts go out to the battered and abused woman who stands trial, but the inexorability of the legal process can't be stopped - she's doomed and there's nothing the Prestons can do to save her. The heroes of this show weren't like other TV or movie lawyers - sometimes, they lost the case, even when they didn't deserve to, just as sometimes they got guilty people off. This was one of several shows in the series calling for nothing less than changes in the law - here shown, most convincingly, to be terrifyingly, dangerously imperfect.moreless
