  • Richie has to find his birth certificate to discover if he has a middle name like all his friends do, but when he finds out it's "Rosebud"....

This is a classic episode I remember from my childhood, and I've watched it on my DVD version a couple of times since I purchased it with no loss of enjoyment.

Yes, the premise is far-fetched. (Would any parents really be willing to saddle their son with such a middle name just to satisfy all the grandparents?) But, the joy of this episode is in the flashback sequence with each grandparent (and one great-grandparent) making their individual cases for the names they want. As with the very best comedy, the exaggeration only makes the kernel of truth at the bottom of it all that much more relevant.

I'm not sure I would rank this episode in my top five, but that's only because this series is so rich in excellence. It's definitely in the top 20, though.moreless

    • The mystery behind the meaning of "Rosebud" is reminiscent of the movie "Citizen Kane," in which Kane whispers "Rosebud" on his deathbed and the meaning of the word is not revealed until the very end of the film. Edit
