      • Sally's glib comment to Rob, as he leaves the office, "lucky thing the army didn't give you the message to Garcia" is a reference to an inspirational essay by Elbert Hubbard, titled "A Message to Garcia." It was about an American officer named Rowan who was given the mission of delivering a message from President McKinley to General Garcia during the Spanish-American War, and against all odds, did so. The essay was translated into a number of other languages, including Japanese, and tons of millions of copies of it had been printed by 1913. Made into a silent film in 1916 and a talkie in 1936, the story was also held up by motivational business people as an example of "getting the job done" without question and with all fortitude, just as Rowan was said to have done.
