The Dismissal is a 1983 television mini-series starring John Allen as John Menadue, Vincent Ball as Justin O'Bryne and Tony Barry as the press secretary. In 1975, Australia's Labor Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam, was removed from office by the Governor-General. Whitlam's removal was only part of the upheaval in the Australian government. The Dismissal also stars Alan Becher, Tony Blackett and Robin Bowering. The mini-series won three Logie Awards in 1984 for Best Lead Actor (John Stanton), Best Miniseries/Telemovie and Best Supporting Actor (John Meillon).

    The 71-year-old, known for his roles in hit Australian films Muriel's Wedding, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Strictly Ballroom, was admitted to a Melbourne hospice on Monday.
