The case in this episode involves the death of man who died while working on his classic car in his garage in the early morning hours. The neighbor next door tells C.D. and Nate that he saw a black kid jump over the fence and run through his yard from his neighbors. He says he has seen him around the neighborhood and that he probably lives at the shelter down the road. Jinny and Magda are sent to find the suspect, but the woman who runs the place chains herself to the door and won’t let anyone in because she’s tired of the homeless being persecuted. It turns out that Kate actually knows the woman, Martha, who runs the shelter and reveals to Martha that the man who was killed, Harper, was the one who wanted the Zoning Board to close the shelter in the first place. The boy is found later trying to re-enter the shelter he got kicked out of, he reveals that Mr. Harper beat him the night before sleeping in his garage. He came back the next night to confront him, but Harper was already dead. Kate soon informs Martha that she’ll be charged with harboring a fugitive after she found out he was at the Harper’s and had blood on him. Damien says he killed Harper, but after Martha talks to him, in front of Magda and Jinny, he recants it and says he was doing it to save the shelter. C.D. and Nate then realize that the screwdriver that killed Harper belonged to Crews. He killed him because Harper poisoned his dog because Crews wanted to use it to hurt Damien. Soon, the Board renews the permit for the shelter.

Anne Marie Johnson did a wonderful job portraying Martha Reed. It’s clear that her character just wanted the best for the homeless, since many of them were only one paycheck away from not having to be on the street. It was great to see that her character actually let Damien stay at the shelter at night, so he wouldn’t get hurt, but you could also see that it was because she didn’t want anything else to go wrong with the shelter so it would get closed down. One could even think that with Johnson’s slender frame that she actually was going through with the hunger strike she was supposedly going through until she found out what the Zoning Board was going to do with the shelter. It was also great to see her character changed and actually start caring about the family she left behind to start the shelter and that she had a change of heart and fixed the rules so that Damien could stay there.

The subplot of the episode involves Raina going to visit her birth mother that she has been searching for for two years. It’s clear that her newfound mother does not really want anything to do with her, and although Raina finds out that she has a brother and sister, neither of them know anything about her. In fact, the woman doesn’t even consider Raina to be her child, just someone she gave birth to years ago. Raina decides to not take no for an answer and shows up on her mother’s front porch, where she gets to see her sister. After confronting her mother, Raina discovers that her mother was raped and that’s how she was conceived. Raina and her mother soon have a heart to heart and Raina returns to San Francisco and finds that her father is now working at a grocery store and goes to see what he looks like.

Taraji P. Henson did probably some of the best acting she has ever done on the series in this episode. She had to have her emotions run the gamut during her entire storyline and she did a terrific job at it. I did however suspect that it would be revealed that her mother had been raped, since that’s what seems to happen on 75% of the storylines in which someone is given up for adoptions, especially if they are a woman. However, it did not take away from the strong story as it was wonderfully written.

This episode was above average, as the main plotline of the man’s murder and the homeless shelter were throughouly entertaining to watch and did not slow the pace of the episode down.
