Brotherhood of Man
AIRED:
Mr. Van Zandt, the leader of the Dutch ownership group, announces that he is giving everyone a one-month paid vacation while the store is remodeled. Drew must continue to work during that time, spoiling his plans to spend Memorial Day weekend at a bed-and-breakfast with Sharon. He tries to make it up to her by organizing a picnic in the store. Mr. Van Zandt arrives while Drew and Sharon are inside a tent, and they overhear him say that he is going to fire everyone and have the store blown up to make way for a parking lot. Drew confronts Van Zandt, who says that the store is barely making a profit and the employees are lazy. He demonstrates this through a series of videotapes. However, he is impressed by Drew's work ethic and offers him the chance to manage the Toledo store if he keeps quiet about the closing of the Cleveland store. Drew feels that it is wrong to keep the staff in the dark, but Van Zandt points out that they will lose their jobs either way. Drew decides to go along with this after Mimi and Larry act rudely toward him; but feels guilty after talking with another employee, a good family man. Drew tries to have the store declared a historical landmark, but this fails. He convinces Van Zandt to save everyone's jobs with a song and dance number about the "brotherhood of man." Meanwhile, Oswald buys a pay phone in the hopes of making money. He proves surprisingly successful, thanks to local teenagers.moreless

At Winfred-Louder, Drew's looking through the paper and gets excited about how it's supposed to rain in Montreal, which is where's he's taking Sharon. Mr. Wick runs in, trying to warn people about one of the the dutch owners coming in. Mimi adjusts her desk and painting, to something more dutch-friendly. Mrs. Louder walks Mr. Van Zandt in, and he meets Drew, Mimi, and Mr. Wick. Mr. Wick gives him the intercom, and he announces a temporary store closing, for some remodeling. They're all going to be paid for the time off, which excites everyone. Drew is then given the bad news that he'll be needed to help out with things, which obviously disappoints him.

At the Warsaw, Drew, Lewis, and Kate are talking a concert. Lewis sent Oswald out for the tickets, but comes back with a phone. It seems he's invested that ticket money in a new business, so they won't be going to the concert afterall.

At Winfred-Louder, Sharon's looking around for Drew, who shows up on a scooter. He takes her to another area of the store where he's got food and a tent. They decide to get in the tent and fool around. They're interrupted by Mr. Van Zandt, speaking to a contractor about plans to demolish the store. When they leave, Sharon and Drew come out of the tent, and Drew's upset about the news.

The next day, Mr. Van Zandt is showing four other men construction plans for the store, and specifically where they're placing the explosions. Drew comes in and confronts Mr. Van Zandt about his plans to demolish the store. They have plans to turn it into a parking garage. He defends the plan by telling Drew about how inefficient the store is, and how the store doesn't make very much money. He even shows Drew a video to prove it all. He goes on to offer Drew a promotion as Store Manager of the Toledo store, but the deal is, Drew can't tell anyone about the demolition plans.

At the Warsaw, Kate and Lewis talk about Oswald, who seems to be making a lot of money with the phone business. Oswald comes in and orders a round of beer for everyone. Sharon and Drew walk in and tell them about how Winfred-Louder is going to be blown up. Larry comes over and brags to Drew about how much money he's going to get because he's now in Mrs. Louder's will. Drew then speaks to his co-worker, Bernard, and Drew decides he's got to warn people about the plan about the store; he doesn't want to see people lose their job like this.

The next day, Drew warns everyone that Mr. Van Zandt is coming in. Mr. Van Zandt comes in angry about Drew telling everyone about the plan and bringing them into work. Drew starts to sing "Brotherhood of Man" and dance to get Mr. Van Zandt to change his mind. He's able to get everyone in the office to get involved, even Lewis, Oswald, Kate, and Sharon.

The show ends with Oswald and Drew revealing the name of the winner of the blooper show contest.

I enjoyed the writing, and thought the plot was a logical place to go, until the Dutch decide to sell the stores.moreless
