EDIT
Look Mom, One Hand!
AIRED:
The guys' mothers come to town for a special Mother's Day brunch at the Warsaw. Kate introduces everyone to her new stepmother, who looks exactly like her. Beulah praises Steve for getting married and starting a family of his own, and all of the mothers nag their kids to follow his example. A web site publishes a list of the biggest Internet porn users in Cleveland, which is scrolled onscreen during the news. The moms are mortified to discover that Drew, Kate, Lewis, Oswald and Wick are on the list. The gang sues to have its names taken off the list. The mothers, led by Beulah and Mrs. Wick, decide to move back in with their kids to get their lives back on the right path. They throw out all of their porn and beer and generally drive them crazy. Mimi's grandmother feels that the women should lighten up. After Beulah catches Drew drinking, she and the other mothers elect to testify on behalf of the anti-porn users site. Drew represents the gang after its lawyer proves incompetent. Tired of the mothers' constant criticism, he turns the tables and accuses them of screwing up the kids by failing to build their self-esteem. The judge gets tired of listening to the argument and rules that the list of porn users is an invasion of privacy and should be removed. The mothers apologize to their kids, who say that they want to eventually have families, but can't be bullied into it.moreless

Tonight's show opens a very short scene where Drew, Lewis, Oswald, and Kate are going through Drew's house trying to remove anything offensive. They're preparing the house for Mother's Day, which is tomorrow.

Over at the Warsaw, everyone gathers for a big Mother's Day celebration. Even Mr. Wick's mother and Kate's step-mother are there. They start talking about how only Steve is married... Drew, Lewis, Oswald, Mr. Wick, and Kate aren't married. On the television, a newscaster interrupts with breaking news about with a list of local people who are mentioned on a website displaying the names of people who look at pornographic websites. All of the mothers are disgusted by the whole thing.

Back at Drew's, the "kids" and the mothers are in separate rooms. After some discussion, the mothers announce they will be moving in with everyone. Lewis quickly puts in his request to live with Kate's step-mother since she's fairly attractive.

Back at Drew's, Drew's computer tells him his access to a pornographic website is blocked. He then walks over to his refrigerator for a beer and finds nothing but soy milk. Outside, Drew finds his mother burning all of his pornographic magazines.

Over at Lewis and Oswald's place, they're sitting in the kitchen with glasses of milk in front of them. They're not quite sure what to do with it, since they're so used to drinking beer. Just then, their mothers come in and ask them to hit on them. The guys are surprised by this, but the mothers have a theory the reason the guys not dating anyone is because they don't know how to come on to a woman. When Oswald hits on Lewis' mother, things seem to go very well, perhaps a little too well. Lewis never gets a chance to hit on Oswald's mother, since she gets into a little argument with Lewis' mother about which son is better at hitting on women.

In the middle of the night, Drew, Lewis, and Oswald gather in Drew's backyard to have a beer. Kate then stops by and tells them they have a court case against the owners of the website their names were listed on. Drew's mother comes outside and breaks up their little party. She goes on to tell them she and the other mothers will be testifying against them in court.

The next day, everyone is in court. When Drew's attorney begins to support the other side, Drew stands up and fires him on the spot and decides to represent himself. Drew goes on to show how his mother and all of the other mothers didn't do a good job raising them, not instilling any sort of self-confidence in them. The judge eventually declares the website is a violation of privacy and demands the names be removed from the website or they will be fined.

The show ends with Drew's mother and Lewis' mother sitting on Drew's couch. They're watching television and discussing how incredible TV-show mothers in past years were so smart and beautiful, an obvious reference to the two of them, who were both TV-show mothers.

Tonight's show was a bit of a disappointment. Nothing really got resolved and was really a waste of a good set of cast members. The premise wasn't very interesting and was more childish than anything.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (4)

    • This episode marks yet another time where Drew has defended himself in court; other examples being Season 1's cartoon courtcase, Season 3 "The Dog and Pony Show" and Season 5 "The Gang Law." Just to name a few.

    • In the ending credits, Marion Ross and June Lockheart compare their character mothering with old sitcom mothering. Marion Ross was on Happy Days, and June Lockhart was on Lassie. They are saying they could not live up to their younger selves.

    • The list of website visitors switches position between shots. You can see the name "Margarita Kirpatrick" appear when Mrs. Wick says "Nigel," but when we see the screen again, the name rolls up again.

    • Kate has a "new stepmother" in this episode, which means that her father would have to be alive. Although no one had ever directly said that her father was dead, this seemed to be implied in many episodes:

In "Drew and Kate and Kate's Mom", Mrs. O'Brien--while trying to get Kate to go for Drew--says, "Your father was my best friend, and we were very happy." Considering how worried she was about Kate getting hurt by men, it is unlikely that she would advise her to follow the same course of action if her own marriage had ended in a bitter divorce. Thus, it seemed more likely that her husband had died.

In "Drew Gets Married", Kate gives her father's wedding band to Drew to use for appearances when the child welfare agent is around. Her dad could have just given it to her after a divorce, but it seemed more like something that would be left behind after death.

Finally, in "The Wedding Dress", while explaining his desire to try to pay for Kate's dress, Drew says, "If her father was still around, he would have figured out a way to pay for it...but he's not." If he was still alive and--as devoted to his daughter as Drew made him sound--then why wasn't he around to help pay for it (or to walk her down the aisle in the next episode)? (Ed. note: This is just a theory, so don't rip my head off if I'm wrong. After all, they're called nitpicks for a reason.)

  • QUOTES (5)

    • Drew (to Lewis): I hate Mother's Day. I have to clean my bathrooms and hide all of my porn. Hey, does anyone know where my Bible is?

    • Beulah: You know what screwed up our kids? Watching those old TV shows those perfect TV mothers.
Misty: Exactly, they were so wise, they knew all the answers. No one could possibly live up to that.
Beulah: And they were so beautiful too.
      Misty: So beautiful.

    • Kate: How are they taking it?
Drew: How would you take it when you find out your baby likes to look at pictures of naked nurses?
Kate: If they're naked, how do you know they're nurses?
Lewis: Well that's been a big topic in the chatrooms for quite some some time now.

    • Drew: (after the mothers see their children's names on the list) If you want us, we'll just be in here masturbating! (mothers look horrified) Too soon, huh?

    • Mrs. Kiniski: Lewis, am I going to see your name on that list?
Lewis: Yes. I'm hideous. I'm the only one who'll touch me.

  • NOTES (1)

    • The list of heavy porn users also included the names of creator/executive producer Bruce Helford and staff writer Adam Faberman.

  • ALLUSIONS (1)

    • Beulah: You know what screwed up our kids? Watching those old TV shows with those perfect TV mothers.
Misty: Exactly, they were so wise, they knew all the answers. No one could possibly live up to that.

The actresses who portray Drew & Lewis' mothers are both "TV Mothers" from the golden age of television.

Marion Ross (Beulah) played Mrs. Cunningham on Happy Days, while June Lockhart (Misty) portrayed the mother on Lassie.
