Episode Summary

Drew suggests that the store promote its new babywear department by holding a "most beautiful baby" contest. Steve and Mimi plan to enter Gus, while Lewis and Oswald back Colleen's nephew. Steve and Mimi prepare for a weekend getaway, but learn that the babysitter is unavailable. Drew volunteers to babysit. Mimi is adamantly opposed to the idea, but Steve talks her into it. Drew tries to teach Gus to say "mama" in the hopes of impressing Mimi and proving that he is a good influence. While Drew tries to help Kate get something from a child-proofed drawer, they get locked in the bathroom. Gus starts riding around on Speedy, but is unharmed. Drew manages to unhinge the bathroom door. He takes out his frustration by flipping off the door. Steve arrives, and is horrified when Gus copies Drew and flips him off. They try to make him forget how to do this by teaching him to give a thumbs-up sign. During the contest, Oswald and Lewis disgust everyone by trying to have their baby perform dangerous tricks. Gus wins the contest, but shocks the crowd by flipping off the American flag during a photo opportunity. His title and prizes are revoked. Mimi blames herself, as she assumes that Gus saw her flip off a driver once. Drew begs Steve not to tell Mimi the truth. When Mimi is still depressed after a week, Drew confesses. Mimi says that she will never let him near her son again. Just then, Gus says his first word, "Mama." After learning that Drew taught it to him, a touched Mimi has a change of heart and lets him babysit.moreless

Tonight's show opens with Drew talking to a few parents who brought their kids in for a beautiful baby contest. Mr. Wick comes in and compliments Drew for his idea to hold the competition, which will help promote the store's baby clothing collection. Steve comes in with Gus, and they're joined by Mimi, who comes out of Mr. Wick's office. Since Mimi and Steve need some time together, they ask Drew to babysit Gus for them. Lewis and Oswald then come in with someone's baby, which surprises Drew. They're planning on using the baby to win the contest and use the money to repair some exhaust pipes they broke while trying to play "Mission: Impossible." When Steve notices the baby Lewis and Oswald brought in, he starts insulting the guys, since that baby is competition in Steve's eyes.

At Drew's, we catch up to him babysitting Gus, when Kate comes down the stairs and joins them in the living room. Kate finds all of the baby-proofing that Drew has done to be a bit much. Lewis and Oswald come in with their baby, and they tell Drew their plan to win the competition: play the newborn blues. After a minute, Lewis and Oswald leave, and Kate goes into the bathroom to get something for Gus. When she has trouble opening a drawer, Drew joins her. It seems he also baby-proofed the drawer, so it made it difficult to open. When Drew turns around to leave, he notices the door is locked from the outside, so he can't get out. He's eventually able to get the door off the hinges, and he and Kate run out to check on Gus, who's just fine. For some bizarre reason, Drew gives the door the finger. When Steve comes in, Drew and Kate act like nothing happened. Steve then picks up Gus, who, in turns gives Steve the finger, picking it up from Drew. Steve chews out Drew for teaching Gus how to flip people off. Since they know Mimi is outside, they decide to teach Gus how to do the thumbs-up, like Fonzie. He seems to learn it in no time, and shows Mimi when she comes in.

Back at the store, Mr. Wick is hosting the baby competition. He introduces Lewis and Oswald, who have their baby doing very dangerous things, so Mr. Wick stops it before the baby can get hurt. Next up is King Gus and Mimi, who end up winning a $1,000 check and a DVD. When Mr. Wick pulls out an American Flag for the baby to pose next to, Gus flips off the flag, and Mr. Wick gives another baby the money and DVD. Mimi thinks that she's the reason for Gus learning how to flip people off. When Steve goes to tell Mimi that Drew taught him, Drew stops him and tells him that she'll get over it, and that he doesn't want to lose the opportunity to see Gus again. Reluctantly, Steve agrees to refrain from telling Mimi about Drew.

Mimi drops by Drew's house for a minute, and it seems Mimi still isn't over Gus' behavior. She brought Gus over since she and Steve are going out. When Drew tells her he was responsible for teaching him how to flip people off, Mimi gets upset and takes Gus away from Drew. As they're about to leave, Gus says his first word, "mama." Drew takes credit for it, since he and Kate tried to teach it to him last week. This makes Mimi change her mind about taking Gus away from Drew, so she gives him back to Drew and leaves for a few hours.

The show ends with Lewis and Oswald playing with the baby from earlier in the show. They're trying to get him to shoot an apple off their head. A few bloopers are then shown.

Tonight's plot was a bit ridiculous. There were a few funny moments here and there, but this wasn't my favorite episode this season.moreless

    • Oswald: We need the money to buy new heating ducts. We fell through the old ones playing "Mission: Impossible." Edit
    • Kate: Why'd you even baby-proof the inside of the door anyway? Drew: Say I have to go to the bathroom. Naturally, I wanna take the baby with me. And then I die on the toilet. Could happen. Kate: Yeah. Drew: And then there's a fire. The baby would be safest in this room. Kate: In a burning house with a corpse? Drew: Well sure, everything sounds bad if ya repeat it. Edit
    • (after getting locked in the bathroom) Drew(to Kate): That's the last time I buy at "Everything's A Quarter," let me tell you. Edit
