This was Elizabeth Ashley's TV debut.
Joey Bishop was the mystery guest on the November 6, 1960 episode of the CBS game show What's My Line? During the end credits, the announcer advertised Joey's upcoming appearance on this episode of The DuPont Show of the Month.
The Black Spot, Capt. Billy Bones, the apple barrel and all the well known story elements come to life, including a parrot (who amazingly stays put on Long John Silvers shoulder throughout the entire show!) The sets are remarkable and complex; the sailing ship, the Admiral Benbow Inn, the Stockade on the island and more. Even the first Dupont commercial is a live production that must have had a budget larger than many shows then on the air. A rip-roaring adventure yarn that could have been improved only by giving Boris Karloff a larger role than the drunken old pirate, Billy Bones, soon to be given "The Black Spot."
The last songs of Cole Porter's lengthy career in music were the ones he composed for this TV special. He died in 1964.
