  • The end of the First World War brings collapse to Germany and sees a Bolshevik government in Russia. Kaiser Wilhelm II is driven into abdication and exile.

The fascinating story of the 70-year collapse of Europe's three ruling dynasties comes to an end with this account of the fall of the idiotic (yet very dangerous) "Kaiser Bill". Barry Foster's performance as the Kaiser, depicted as a pompous, pretentious, devious and yet rather stupid bully, rivets one's attention, as he still fails to comprehend quite what has happened even as he disappears into exile forever. The episode does contain a (rare) mistake - before the end of the war, the Kaiser is seen mourning the murders of the Russian royal family, although, in fact, the Bolsheviks kept the Ekaterinburg massacre of 1918 a closely-guarded secret for over a year.moreless
