Ben and Johnny are watching a horror movie and fighting over the TV when Reed reveals that a number of planets that formerly showed life are now barren. Sue shows up and reveals that the tenants want them out of the Baxter Building due to Reed's experiments, Johnny's fiery habits, and Ben's strength. They are interrupted by the sky bursting into flames!
The Four investigate in the Fantasti-Car and determine the flames are holograms. An immaterial presence has bypassed the security systems at the lab and they go to check it out and confront . . . The Watcher. The giant alien warns that his race can never interfere, but he warns that humanity faces extinction and he cannot let Earth be obliterated. He's responsible for the flaming sky, which he used to try and conceal Earth from . . . Galactus, Devourer of Worlds. Galactus' Herald, the Silver Surfer, is scouting for Earth. The Watcher creates a barrier of rocks but the Surfer penetrates it and determines the planet is suitable for his master's feeding.
The Fantastic Four try to intercept the Surfer before he can signal his master but fail. They send him flying but Galactus' ship arrives and Galactus himself, a giant purple-armored giant, emerges and begins to construct his elemental converted. Reed advises caution but the Thing disregards him and is easily repelled. The Watcher appeals to Galactus who admits he is unwilling to kill anything but must "do what he was born to do". The Thing attacks again but the Fantastic Four as are gnats to Galactus and he prepares to destroy the Earth.
