  • Fred wants to buy Boulder Dan's pool parlor, but the only way he can raise the money is to win at the racetrack. He does, but then he is robbed.

"At the Races" was recorded on April 18, 1960, and originally aired on Nov. 18, 1960.

These are my comments and questions about the episode:

    1. The 1960 theme song and opening credits are played.

    2. This episode shows one of Fred's numerous bosses before the arrival of Mr. Slate.

    3. There is a blooper in this episode. In the mugging scene, Fred's orange outfit temporarily loses its black spots!

    4. The "Colonel" will reappear in a number of episodes, sometimes with a different story background, but always with a Texas accent. I have to wonder if it isn't the same guy all the time, continually trying to con the people of Bedrock into believe his stories.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (1)

  • QUOTES (3)

    • Barney: (straining to pick the rock up) This is heavy!
Fred: All the better to keep the money under. (puts wallet under rock) Look and see if anyone's around.
      Barney: Okay, Fred.

    • Wilma: Now, Fred, I just called the doctor and you're not to stir till he gets here.
Fred: I'd like to stir Barney. With a bat, that is.

    • Fred: Your tightwad boss betting on races?
Barney: Yup. Sabertooth in the fifth, at 40-to-1.
Fred: 40-to-1? He must think it's a sure thing.
Barney: Oh, look, if old tightwad bets on it, it is. Did I tell you he locks the paper clips in the safe every night?

  • NOTES (2)

    • The part where Fred and Barney make up a story to Wilma about Fred being mugged is quite like the I Love Lucy episode titled "Lucy Cries Wolf", where Lucy phones Ricky and the Mertzes, telling them that she is being attacked.
