  • Will and Carlton study for exans

    8.5
The first episode of 1994 was pretty good. Both Will and Carlton had exams and in typical fashion and one is ready and the other is not. If you had been watching the whole series or the whole series up to this point, I don't need to tell you. Even though it wasn't much of a story, but Hilary being the spokesperson for the coffee, was pretty funny. The story with Ashley was good as well. You get to see some of Will's teachings that Ashley uses on Phillp. I did find it surprising that Phillp was controlling in this episode then in the previous episode where he didn't seem to care. It was also weird that he never caught onto the lie she told. Phillp and Geoffrey and hunting down the cricket had it moments. The cracks that Geoffrey made were funny. Another funny moment is when Phillp tried to get the cricket and accidentally erased Carlton's paper, his reaction was kind of similar to Kevin from Home Alone.

While not as good as the first, this was still a good episode.moreless
  • The perfect example of a high-quality Fresh Prince episode.

Sleepless in Bel-Air revolves around Will's late-night struggle to study for his Chemistry test the next day; however, surrounding Will is a web of chaos, as each member of the family attempts to accomplish their own nocturnal goals. I don't want to spoil any of the jokes, but they are some of the series's finest. This fourth season episode was created during the peak of the show's creative energy, and it clearly shows. The characters are well-defined and the actors are very comfortable in the roles, making this episode one of many during this time period which flow very smoothly and believably from one scene to the next. Even considering the high quantity of good episodes, the sheer amount of action going on in Sleepless in Bel-Air makes it the best example of the comedic energy present in the fourth season.moreless

    9.9
This is definitely a classic episode as Will stays up all night studying for his chemistry test in which he only studies one sentence introducing the book and has so many brilliant and hilarious distractions such as Nicky crying, Carlton’s habits, Hillary’s coffee high, Ashley breaking curfew and the damn crickets chirping.

From the start with Will faking his saxophone talents to the end where Will cheats then on a second take at Carlton’s request, says that next time he’ll study hard at his local library, the episode is a barrel of laughs with so many plots and gags that it is impossible not to like.moreless
  • Will wait too long to study for his mid-terms, and once he finally gets down to craming a lot of distractions occur in the middle of the night, so bad he can't get past the first page.moreless

    8.7
Basically it's your simple modernized version of the Assop's Fable The Ant and the Grasshoper with the same moral. But it's funny because of the bizzare circumstances all of the character's around Will suffer from. The funniest being Uncle Phil's and Jeffery's safari hunt for an annoying cricket. Uncle Phil being agressive as usual and Jeffery going in out of his way to be usless and make things harder on Phil. Then there's Hillery being all hyper and Ashley being both rebelious and a jerk at the same time, who has a tendency to play scapegoat despite being aware of the crimes she commited at her free will. And in the end even though Will learned his lession you can't help but get the feeling he might not have learned it all the way.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (5)

    • Will tells Ashley that this is her first real date but her first real date was with Tevin Campbell in season one's episode Just Infatuation.

    • In the kitchen after Will says 'check please' if you notice there's a boom mic visible.

    • The girl in the beginning also played Candy in the episode There's The Rub as one of the brothel girls

    • Goof: When Carlton's laptop gets unplugged, he shouldn't of lost all his information because the battery would have prevented the computer from shutting down.

    • Goof: When Carlton is at the kitchen table working on his paper with Will, he opens a bag of chips and takes a bite. The loud crunch bugs Will, but the echo of the chip crunch is audible, so it was obviously a special effect.

  • QUOTES (16)

    • Hilary: (on the dictionary) It's so much fun, it's just full of all kinds of words, big words, little words, abbreviations, common phrases. Can I look up a word for you?
      Will: Yeah, go away.
      Hilary: That's two words.

    • Phil: If Ashley tried something like that, I'd throttle her.
Will: Wait a minute, throttling isn't anything like killing, is it?
Hilary: (coming downstairs reading the dictionary) Not exactly. The second definition of throttle is to strangle: choke. Killing is a result of throttling.
      (Philip goes upstairs)
Carlton: Either way I think we're about to see a demonstration.

    • Will:(imitating a powerful voice) All hail. The King of Cram is about to take his throne!

    • Will: Guys are only after two things.
Ashley: I thought they were only after one thing.
Will: Well yeah, but they wanna do it more than once.

    • Philip: This will take care of that crickett.
      Geoffrey: Sir, that's air-freshner.
Philip: Well its all we have. It might work.
Geoffrey: Yes. Perhaps the scent of sea breeze will recall some painful memory for him, and then he'll commit suicide.

    • Philip: Come on Geoffrey. I'll hunt down that crickett if it's the last thing I do.
Geoffrey: His head will make a fine trophey sir.

    • (Philip and Geoffrey are hunting a crickett)
Philip: That bug isn't going to get the best of me. Now I know how Captain Ahab felt when he was chasing Moby Dick.
Geoffrey: Between the two of you, the cricket is the whale?

    • Ashley: Come on, Dad, 10 years? The Menendez brothers will be out before I am.
Philip: The Menendez brothers got home on time.

    • Philip: Where'd you last put the insecticide?
      Geoffrey: In your soup.

    • Will: Time out, Ashley's home.
Carlton: Ashely? I thought she was upstairs in bed.
Will: Yeah, you also thought Tupac Shakur was a Jewish holiday.

    • Vivian: You can't stop little girls from growing up.
Philip: I can, and I will!

    • (Philip, going up the stairs and inadvertently squashing the cricket)
      Philip: I killed the cricket!
Geoffrey: Oh, what a horrible death!

    • Carlton is tapping his fingers on the table, Will stares at him.
      Carlton: Sorry, bad habit.
Carlton opens a bag of chips and chews loudly, Will takes the bag and hits Carlton on the head.
      Will: Sorry, bad habit!

    • Ashley: Why are you guys still up? You're making it really hard for me to sneak in.
Will: Ashley, you know full well if you wanna sneak past Uncle Phil, you don't go through the kitchen.

    • Ashley: Will, this is all your fault!
Will: What is that, like the theme of this family?

    • Will: Ding dong the cricket's dead, Ashley's grounded, now y'all go to bed.

  • NOTES (2)

    • International Episode Titles:
Czech Republic - Bezesná noc (Sleepless Night)

    • While hunting down the cricket, Philip accidentally trips over the cord of the laptop, knocking it out of the socket and permanently deleting Carlton's term paper. Carlton is upset but syndication cuts the part where he says that it was only for extra credit.

  • ALLUSIONS (3)

    • Will: Ding,Dong the cricket's dead, Ashley's grounded, now y'all go to bed.
This was is a play on the famous 1939 musical, The Wizard of Oz. The Munchkins sing: "Ding Dong! The Wicked Witch is dead. Wake up, sleepy head, rub your eyes, get out of bed" when the Wicked Witch of the East gets crushed by Dorothy's house.

    • Uncle Phil compares his search to kill the annoying cricket like that of Captain Ahab searching the whale from the book Moby Dick by Herman Melville. Of course Geoffry asks between Phil and the cricket, the cricket's the whale, comparing Phil to the large looming whale that terrorizes Ahab.

    • Title: Sleepless in Bel-Air
The title of this episode is a take off on the 1993 film Sleepless in Seattle starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.
