Before Mister Rogers Neighborhood, The Electic Company and Sesame Street, there was The Friendly Giant. Every Canadian kid who was around prior to 1985 watched the show with a sense of wonder. A definitive children's show. Charming, calming, full of stories and music. There is virtually nothing in the current selection of children's programming that matches it for pure quality. I cannot understand why this isn't showing in reruns. There is an entire channel dedicated to children's programming, and CBC itself still has shows geared for children in the morning. After being invited into the Giant's Castle, the audience would spend a 15 minute, commercial-free visit chatting with the most calming fellow since Fred Rogers who would talk to kids as though they were people, not idiots. He didn't talk down to his audience. He treated them with respect and we loved him for it. If any show deserves to be brought back in reruns (Bob Homme, the man who played the Giant, passed away in 2000) it's this one. Until they do, I'll just look up....look waaaaay up.moreless
