Home Is the Hunted
AIRED:
Kimble returns to his hometown of Stafford, Indiana, after learning that his father, John, has suffered a heart attack. John has donated his medical library to the University of Wisconsin and is in the process of selling the family home. While Kimble hides out at the home of his sister, Donna, and her sympathetic husband, Leonard, he blames himself for their father's condition. Kimble is further troubled by his younger brother, Ray, who believes Kimble is guilty and thinks he's to blame for ruining his life, since people see Ray as "the brother of a killer." Meanwhile, Gerard arrives in town to search for Kimble and focuses on Donna and Leonard, who try to shake off the relentless detective long enough for Kimble to get out of town before Gerard finds him.moreless

  • Meet the Kimbles.

"The Girl from Little Egypt" gave us the background of Helen's murder. Now with this episode, we see another part of Kimble's life before his ordeal - his family. After almost two years on the run, Kimble is willing to risk capture to see his father, sister and brother.

These scenes are powerfully acted and beautifully scripted. You have no doubt that these people are a family weathering a terrible storm. The chemistry between Janssen and Jacqueline Scott as Kimble's sister Donna is especially strong. We've seen Kimble over fourteen episodes put his freedom in jeopardy for strangers - it's nice to see the change come over him when he's reunited with people he loves, and people he cannot see because of his flight. The scene where Kimble and his father reunite and hug after so long is unbelievably poignant. And, even though it's resolved a bit too quickly, the strife between Kimble and his brother rings true as being rooted in childhood and escalated by the murder.

Gerard's presence in the episode offers more insight into his character. He certainly isn't the cliche cop badgering the Kimble family hoping to shake loose some information. In fact, he seems genuinely concerned (he intervenes to save Ray from jail; he inquires about Dr. Kimble's health). Just because he hunts Richard doesn't mean he has an axe to grind with the whole Kimble family. It's like Gerard views them as indirect victims of Kimble. Barry Morse is terrific as always, especially in a tense scene where he comes dangerously close to discovering Kimble's hair dye.moreless

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • "Home is the Hunted" was filmed before the show's location was officially changed from Wisconsin to Indiana. At the start of Act I, Kimble gets off a bus marked "Madison," even as the narrator announces he has arrived in Stafford. Dr. John Kimble has donated his medical library to the University of Wisconsin. Richard Kimble was originally to have been from Madison, but Roy Huggins had to change the locale once he learned Wisconsin did not have the death penalty.

  • QUOTES (2)

    • Opening Narration: Always there is the hunter, the hunted, and the trap. Traps are of many kinds: of wind, of steel, of words. But this time the trap is a city. Dr. Richard Kimble, two years a fugitive, is about to enter the trap. Why is Stafford, Indiana, a trap for Richard Kimble? Because, here, a thousand people know him. This city is where Richard Kimble lived for thirty-three years. This is the neighborhood Richard Kimble knew as a child. Here is the house in which he grew up, now in time of desperate trouble for him, a starting place within a city of danger -- a city of danger because, here, is also the headquarters of Lieutenant Philip Gerard.

    • Closing Narration: Home is the sailor, home from the sea. And the hunter, home from the hill. But for Richard Kimble, not yet. Not yet.
