The Gentle Touch began in early 1980 and starred Jill Gascoine as Britains first ever lead female detective (just five months before the far inferior Juliet Bravo limped into action).
Firstly Jill Gascoine possessed a lot of screen charisma which instantly made the show watchable. Her sensitive and intelligent portrayal of DCI Maggie Forbes has been considerably over-looked in more recent years for some bizarre reason, despite huge ratings in its day.
The first episode saw Maggies husband killed in an armed robbery and shows her trying to deal with her grief and to bring the murderers to justice. In this two part story there is a particularly good supporting turn from Sue Nicholls (better known as Audrey Roberts in Coronation Street) as Joanne Blanden, the wife of Harry Blanden, one of the men responsible for the murder of Maggies husband.
From then on The Gentle Touch, turned into a cracking detective series dealing with murders, prostitution, homeosexuality etc and accurately mirrored Thatchers Britain as it was in the early 80\'s.
