  • A quarter of a century after their hopes and dreams as Cambridge undergraduates, Adam and Anna have both been disappointed.

There is, as usual, a great deal of facile stuff in this episode - Frederic Raphael can never resist his clever little jokes, even when they're not clever - but there is also some real substance here. Emily Richard, in a relatively brief, but shattering, appearance as the once-beautiful, now-desperate Anna rivets one's attention - a brilliant piece of acting, and heartbreaking. There is also a fine scene later in the episode when Adam, after his father's death (but only then), is finally reconciled with this hard, decent old man - his reminiscences with his brother make a very moving scene, effective because so simple. This could have been a major series - its best scenes, and there are plenty of them, belong in one - but, instead, it's a deeply flawed, fascinating one. Any chance of a DVD release?moreless

    • A little over thirty years after this series first aired, Frederic Raphael wrote a sequel of sorts - but for radio, not television. "Fame And Fortune" was broadcast in 2007 and saw the central characters of "The Glittering Prizes" entering the Thatcher era. A second radio series, entitled "Final Demands" and featuring Tom Conti and Barbara Kellerman in their old TV roles, brought Adam and Barbara Morris into the 1990s, and is scheduled for broadcasting in March, 2010.
