  • Student activism is growing at a redbrick university. When students find what seems to be evidence of racial prejudice, tempers flare.

This was the oddest episode of this brief series, because it centres on someone we hadn't seen before (and wouldn't see again). This central character is Gavin Pope, another Cambridge graduate, but one never seen or mentioned in any previous episode. A reading of Frederic Raphael's novelization of his television scripts reveals an early scene in the first story in which Pope appears, somewhat older than the other regulars, a sneering, right-wing upper-cruster; but this scene was cut from the television version, so that when episode four unfurls, we have no idea who he is. This fatally damages our engagement with the episode; Gavin's transformation into a committed liberal in middle-age means nothing to us, because we haven't seen him any different.moreless
