  • Not my favorite episode!

So the girls want to surprise Blanche on her birthday by pretending it's someone else's birthday. To me, to do that might have been a good idea if they didn't do all the flashbacks. They were just silly and unfunny. The scene with Rose in her kitchen with the cake was touching so I liked that scene, but the whole Mr. Ha-Ha thing was unnecessary and they didn't need to do all the flashbacks. It would have been funnier to see them trying to keep Blanche from finding out.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • Trivia: According to a flashback, Sophia was born in April of 1906.

    • The girls surprise Blanche with an early party because they don't want her to catch on. They obviously know when her birthay is. However, Season Six's "Snap Out of it" comes and all of a sudden the girls have an ephiany that it must be her birthday, and go to great lengths to find out when it is. They already know.

    • Alan Blumenfeld plays Mr. Ha Ha in this episode. He appeared once before on The Golden Girls in the first season episode entitled "Second Motherhood" where he played the part of Lou, the plumber.

  • QUOTES (8)

    • Dorothy: We are throwing a surprise birthday party for Blanche. I want you to go out to the lanai and mingle with the other guests.
      Sophia: Check! ...What's a lanai?
      Dorothy: The porch!
      Sophia: Excuse me, Krystle Carrington!

    • Sophia: (discussing birthdays) After 80, every year without a headstone is a milestone.

    • Sophia: May you lose the last three hairs on your head.
Sal: Oh yeah? May you lose your tweezers so your eyebrows grow together and cover that wart in the middle.
      Sophia: That's not a wart, that's a beauty mark!
Sal: On Sofia Loren it's a beauty mark, on you and Krushchev it's a wart!
Young Dorothy: Pop, come out of the bedroom.
Sal: Not while she's out there, she hit me.
      Young Dorothy: Ma!
Sophia: With a piece of bread!
Sal: Five days old, it was like a jack handle!

    • Sophia: I have a rotten marriage and I'm leaving my husband.
Young Dorothy: You and Pop had a fight.
Sophia: You just love to show off that college education, don't you?

    • Young Dorothy: Happy birthday, Mom.
      Sophia: Ah shut up.
      Young Dorothy: You're welcome.

    • Mr. Haha: Jeanie is 7, Bobby is 9, and Dorothy...
Dorothy: I'll punch your heart out Haha!
      Mr. Haha: Dorothy's the oldest.

    • Sophia: TV is just a fad.
Young Dorothy: Ma, it is not a fad, otherwise Stouffers would be calling those "Radio Dinners".
Salvadore Petrillo: Hey you know the peas taste like fresh? But you can't mix them in with the mashed potatoes. They ought to have a tunnel that runs from the pea compartment to the mashed potato compartment.

    • Mr. Ha Ha: Come on, kids. Make a wish and blow out the candles. I hope everybody gets what they wished for.
Dorothy: Do you really, Mr. Ha Ha?

    • The background shot during the closing credits features the four ladies gathered around the kitchen table, while Dorothy smiles at Sophia.

    • The red-haired boy at Dorothy's birthday party is named Bobby Spina. Robert Spina was actually the name of a crew member, most noteably a writer. Also, the girl they mentioned when they call the kids up on stage is Jeannie Taylor. She, too, was a crew member.

    • It is revealed Sophia was born in April

    • This is the first time Lyn Greene appears as Young Dorothy Zbornak. This would be Dorothy in her 20's and 30's. She would appear about four times during the series.

    • It is mentioned that Sophia was born in 1906, which would make her 79 in 1985 for the series pilot. This would mean by The Golden Girls series finale, Sophia was 87 years old and by the end of The Golden Palace, Sophia would be 88. After Golden Palace, Sophia returned to Shady Pines for two years on Empty Nest concluding her television run at the age of 90.
