    who played Melissa, Blanche's granddaughter?
  • Season 7, Episode 3.

This episode was beastly, no pun intended with the title. Sophia starting in the wheelchair was hilarious! She sneezed and blew herself off the stool! Haha! Blanche took her seven-year-old granddaughter to watch the sailors come in. Wow. That was pretty funny. I loved it! It was so good, like every episode! Rose lost the Little Miss St. Olaf pageant! 23 years in a row! They chose someone's imaginary playmate over her! Wow. She smelled rats... Rose is so funny, God bless her. Dorothy lost the Little Miss Brooklyn contest, and Sophia was a judge! LMAO! I love Sophia! She and Rose are my favorites!moreless

This was a good episode. Sophia has been recently ill, so Dorothy hires a former Shady Pines nurse (played by the magnificant Edie McClurg) to look after her. Sophia feins illness to keep the nurse in the house when she is driving the other girls crazy. This is classic Sophia!

Blanche's granddaughter comes to visit and Blanche becomes obsessed with her entering a junior beauty competition. When the granddaughter freezes up during the talent portion, Blanche performs "You are my Sunshine" complete with boa and dance routine!

I wouldn't say that this is one of the best episodes of the series, but it is certainly worth a watch.moreless
  • Sophia needs somebody to look after her.

I really didn't enjoy the story of Blanche's granddaughter. I did find the joke of how Sohpia was a judge in the Little Miss Brooklyn Pageant and she didn't vote for Dorothy and she was sitting in the front row sucking a lemon very funny though. I more enjoyed the Nurse DeFarge story. It was funny and a great season seven episode.

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • Melissa is the child of Blanche's daughter Janet, and she is seven years old. Yet, in the episode "On Golden Girls," which aired during Season 1, we meet Janet's son David, who is 14, and we are led to believe that he's an only child. Melissa would have existed back then (she would have been a year old), but she was never talked about. For that matter, we actually meet Janet herself later this season, in "Home Again, Rose," and in that 2-part episode, she has a 4-year-old little girl named Sarah, and Melissa is never even mentioned.

  • QUOTES (14)

    • Nurse DeFarge: Now where's my patient?
      Sophia: Don't you mean victim?

    • Nurse DeFarge: You know what happens when a nurse is late? People die.
Dorothy: Well, then, let's get the party started!

    • Rose: We were getting ready to watch A Nun's Story, I've never seen it before.
Nurse DeFarge: She leaves the convent in the end.

    • Sophia: Well, now that I'm up, I might as well do some shopping.
Dorothy: Get back here, you deceitful little Sicilian gecko!

    • Sophia: Dorothy, I really wish you'd respect my feelings about this.
Dorothy: Ma, I really wish you had voted for me in the Little Miss Brooklyn pageant!
Sophia: Hey, I calls 'em as I sees 'em.

    • Melissa: Hi, my name is Melissa, and I'm five years old.
      Rose: Blanche, she's seven.
Dorothy: No, that works out to be five in Blanche years.

    • Blanche: Dorothy, at 2 a.m. in the morning, I was entertaining a gentleman caller. She walked in on me at the most inopportune time. I could have lost my balance and chipped a tooth.
Rose: You think that's bad? She came into my room when I was reenacting the plank-walking scene from Peter Pan.
Dorothy: What the hell goes on at night in this house? Look, girls. I know you're upset, but nothing I have heard is grounds for firing the woman.
Nurse DeFarge: Oh by the way, a man called wanting to know if you were free Saturday night, but I forgot to write down the number. Sorry!
      Dorothy: Hasta la vista, baby!

    • Blanche: Melissa, I know you're just a little girl, but this is the part where you're supposed to say "Wait, Grandma, I love you, don't go."
      Melissa: Why?
Blanche: Well, because you're from the south, honey. It's just good manners.
Melissa: Of course I still love you. You're my grandma. I'm just mad at you.
Blanche: (relieved) Oh, well, I can accept that--if you're still gonna give me another chance, that is. I really do still want a chance to be the best grandma ever. What do you say?
Melissa: Can I start calling you Grandma again?
Blanche: Oh, sure! (they hug) Just not around anybody in uniform, okay?

    • Sophia: It's your fault that I broke both my ankles in the first place.
Dorothy: Me? You're the one who sneezed and blew yourself off the stool!
Sophia: It wouldn't have happened if you had let me sit at the table that night.
Dorothy: Ma, you know the rules. When we eat Mexican food, you sit at the counter!

    • Rose: Lost the Little Miss Brooklyn pageant, did we?
Dorothy: I practiced that trombone for weeks, and then when I went out, there was Ma in the front row, sucking a lemon.
Blanche: You were just nervous because your mother was in the audience.
      Dorothy: She was a judge.

    • Dorothy: Lost the Little Miss St. Olaf pageant, did we?
Rose: Twenty-three years in a row, one time they picked Emily Ditmyer's imaginary friend over me.

    • Nurse Defarge: (to Rose) Good morning.
Rose: Not for you, nursy nurse nurse nurse!

    • Nurse Defarge: You're pussycat, too?
Dorothy: I'm pussycat one, you are pussycat two!

    • Sophia: I wuv you.
      Dorothy: Too wittle, Too wate.

  • NOTES (3)

    • When Blanche enters the bedroom to talk to Melissa you can clearly see it's where Dorothy's room is supposed to be, as outside you can plainly see the door that leads to Blanche's room at the end of the hall.

    • Adorable young actress Alisan Porter, who plays Blanche's granddaughter Melissa, is perhaps best known for her title role in the memorable film "Curly Sue," where she acted alongside Jim Belushi.

    • Edie McClurg, one of the 80s most ubiquitous character actresses, appears as Nurse DeFarge. She is best known as Bonnie Brindle on Small Wonder and Mrs. Poole on The Hogan Family.
