Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • Blanche seems to have awful strong opinions about her daughter's apparent weight gain, and is determined to fix it. Not only that, Blanche has always declared what a stunning beauty she has always been. Yet in Season Five we learn Blanche was fat as a child. Shouldn't she have more sympathy for someone in this condition, not to mention her own daughter?

    • Dorothy is the only person in this episode who does not call Becky "fat" right to her face. For that matter, Dorothy is the only one who doesn't mention the girl's weight at all.

    • Blanche's daughter remarks when Blanche shows her to her room... "Momma you have a lovely home"... I thought that Blanche and George lived and raised their family in that home... why would her daughter say that if that was the house she grew up in?

  • QUOTES (19)

    • McCracken: (after Sophia tells her story) You expect me to buy that? Look, the only reason I came over here was so you wouldn't cause a scene at The Chow Wagon when I fired you.
      Sophia: Fired us?!
McCracken: You heard me. And no story you could tell is gonna change my mind.
Edna: Not even the one we could tell your father about how his car got dented while you were doing wheelies and not while it was sitting in the parking lot?!
McCracken: You wouldn't do that. Would you?
Sophia: Hey. She's your grandmother. Has she ever lied to you?

    • Sophia: (about her boss) He said that Edna and Mildred could only take ten-minute bathroom breaks.
Dorothy: Well, Ma, that's not unreasonable.
Sophia: Please! They're 84 years old. It takes Mildred ten minutes to roll down her stockings!

    • Rose: It's not like Blanche to go to bed at eight o'clock.
Sophia: At least not by herself!
      Dorothy: She's depressed, Rose.
Rose: Do you think she's depressed because of Rebecca?
Dorothy: No, Rose. She's depressed because Marblehead Manor is only on once a week.
Rose: Boy, I remember on the farm, when we'd get depressed. Grandma could always cheer us up... she'd take out her dentures and take a healthy swig of the aquarium and then hold a flashlight under a chin, so we could watch the goldfish swim from cheek to cheek... boy we could have watched them all day... but visiting hours were only from ten to four.

    • Rose: You know, Sophia, your problem at work reminds me of something that happened back in St. Olaf.
Sophia: Please. Dust reminds you of something in St. Olaf!

    • Rose: (about Blanche) Dorothy, I know how hard it is to just sit back and watch, but there's nothing we can do. It's her daughter, it's her choice. It's like something that happened back in St. Olaf--
Dorothy: Oh, stop! Rose, why is it that every time one of us makes an observation, the first thing you say is "Back in St. Olaf?" Did it ever occur to you that maybe the rest of us are tired of hearing "Back in St. Olaf, back in St. Olaf, back in St. Olaf?"
Rose: Gee, no, I never realized. I'm sorry.
Dorothy: Oh, it's all right. (pats her hand)
Rose: (after a brief silence) Back in that town whose name you are tired of hearing--
      Dorothy: ROSE!

    • Blanche: (to Becky) Let me get a look at you.
Sophia: This could take several hours.

    • (talking to Becky - Blanche's overweight daughter)
Rose: So, Becky. What brings you to Miami?
Sophia: My guess is, a small barge.

    • Rose: In the meantime, would you like some milk and some Double Stuff Oreos?
      McCracken: No thank you, ma'am.
      Dorothy: Boy, he's tough!

    • Becky: I'm still never good enough for you, am I, Mama? Just like when I was in school. It never mattered that I was pretty, I had to be the prettiest. It never mattered that I was popular, I had to be the most popular. Never mattered that I was bright, I had to be the brightest.
Blanche: That doesn't mean you had to go out and become the fattest!

    • Blanche: Now, Becky, I've held my tongue for a week, but I can't let you walk out that door without asking why. Why are you doing this?
Becky: Because I want a husband, I want a family, and Jeremy may be my last chance.

    • Blanche: Aw, Becky honey, don't worry. I love you just the way you are, every last pound of you! Just out of curiosity, how many pounds am I currently loving?

    • Blanche: We were always so much alike and so close, just like Siamese twins.
Sophia: It's a shame when they separated you, you got both butts.

    • Jeremy: Blanche, I would like to ask for your daughter's hand in marriage. I'd ask for the rest of her, but I've got a bad back!

    • Rebecca: Jeremy, you haven't said a thing about my new outfit. You know, that's not very nice.
Jeremy: I was trying to be nice. That's why I didn't say anything.

    • Jeremy: Well, there were no tables left at the restaurant, so I just sat...at Becky.

    • Jeremy: Becky's a bigger fan than me. Becky's a bigger everything.
      Dorothy: Not everything, Jeremy.

    • Blanche: Sophia, you tell me. Am I a bad mother?
Sophia: You did what you had to do.
Blanche: Why can't children realize we're just trying to do what's best for them?
Sophia: Because they're kids. Someday, when they have their own, they'll understand.

    • (Rose's reaction to Rebecca's weight)
Rose: Oh, it's just we didn't expect you to be so fat!

    • Sophia: (upon meeting Blanche's overweight daughter, a former model) What did she model, car covers?
