Blanche says that jealousy drives a wedge between sisters, and that her sisters didn't like her because she was a devastatingly beautiful child. However, in season five's "Ebb Tide" Blanche was a fat child before she became a stunning beauty.
It seems very unlikely that Angela would fly thousands of miles to another country, show up on her sister's doorstep, and then within an hour of being there, decide to pack up her life and move back to the states. Not to mention, by the end of the episode, it's not even clearly stated what Angela is going to do.
If Count Bessie wandered out of her cage and Rose couldn't find her, it would be pretty easy to find her, because you'd obviously hear a chicken clucking somewhere in the house (see I Love Lucy episode #172, "Lucy Does the Tango")
Sophia declares that her and Angela are the only ones left of the original family. Did Sophia forget about her brother Angelo who arrives on a later episode?
Dorothy: Look Rose, if you're worried about voids, start with the one in your head!
Sophia: Look at these liver spots! I've got more brown skin than the Temptations.
Blanche: Angela, that was the best meal I've ever had in my life.
Angela: Well, how good could it have been? You left half of it.
Blanche: I ate every bite!
Angela: There's some sauce left. If you'd really liked it, you'd take a hunk of bread and sop it all up. You can afford it!
Blanche: Oh, no I cant! I've put on a few pounds, you just haven't noticed.
Angela: What am I blind? I can see that. I meant the bread. You can afford it, it's only 89 cents a loaf.
(Rose is trying to find a replacement for Count Bessie)
Rose: Four chickens and not one of them has any musical ability!
Dorothy: That's too bad. I guess it's because all the young chickens are wasting time playing video games
Dorothy: Boy wasn't that story about the heart transplant amazing!
Blanche: Oh, I wasn't paying attention; I was too busy fantasizing about what Tom Brokaw looks like naked.
Dorothy: I think he sensed it, I thought I saw him looking down your blouse.
(Rose is trying to persuade Blanche into letting her babysit Count Bessie.)
Rose: She isn't just a chicken. Count Bessie is a showbiz chicken!
Blanche: (to Dorothy) What does she do, play the piano?
(Rose re-enters with a mini-piano)
Rose: She plays the piano!
Rose: (modestly) ... but I'm not one to blow my own gertubenfluben.
Sophia: I can't even reach mine.
This episode was videotaped on January 31, 1987.
Count Bessie is named for the jazz musician William "Count" Basie and the Count Basie Orchestra.
Ranked #5 for the week.
Bea Arthur had a horrible fear of live chickens, so during this episode, it was arranged that she be across the room when Count Bessie, the chicken, was in the scene.
The background shot during the ending credits features the four ladies and Angela sitting at, or gathered around the kitchen table at night.
This is Nancy Walker's second and final appearance as Sophia's sister, Angela. She is never again mentioned or referenced following this episode.
Nancy first appeared in an earlier episode in this season called The Sisters.
Sophia:Look at these liver spots! I've got more brown skin than the Temptations.
