  • Showed that the character of Sophia had more depth than just one-liners.

I enjoyed watching Sophia and her friend Alvin enjoy their sitting on the boardwalk. It was very sad when we find out that he has Alzheimers. I felt so bad for Sophia because it proved she was not prejudice and she enjoyed the company. It was quite a beautiful episode. The part with Rose snatching the teddy bear from the rude girl was priceless. I wish Rose would've punched her too though.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • When Blanche tells Daisy to get the things on Mrs. Nylund's bed she goes in and brings the items out of Sophia's bedroom, but when Rose comes home, she goes into her real bedroom and comes out and notices Fernando is missing.

    • When Dorothy comes down from the hallway with her pink outfit, she enters out of Rose's bedroom (last door on the left). Why would her clothes be in Rose's bedroom?

    • Why would Sophia be knitting a scarf for her friend when the two of them both live in tropical Miami? It isn't until after she's started making it that it is revealed Alvin will be moving to New York.

  • QUOTES (11)

    • Dorothy: You want me to give you a ride down to the boardwalk?
Sophia: No, I want to do cartwheels for six miles.

    • Dorothy: Ma, where are you going?
Sophia: Down to the boardwalk. I like to watch the old guys rearrange themselves when they come out of the water.

    • Blanche: Look what I found. (takes a teddy bear from behind her back) Fernando!
      Rose: That's not Fernando.
Blanche: What do you mean it's not Fernando?
Rose: All you have to do is look in his eyes.
Dorothy: Or the price tag stuck to his back.

    • Sophia: I'm making a scarf for a friend I don't have anymore.
Rose: I know what you mean. (holds up a pair of teddy bear-sized overalls) I made these for Fernando.

    • Daisy: (holding a water pistol to Fernando the teddy bear's head) See this water pistol? It's loaded with red ink!
      (Rose walks in)
Blanche: Rose, don't move, honey! She's got the teddy bear and a water pistol!
      Rose: What?
Dorothy: Rose, it won't sound anymore ridiculous if you hear it a second time.

    • Sophia: You know, Dorothy, people think that when you get to be my age, you should be grateful just to be alive. Well, that's not how it works. You need to have a reason to get up in the morning, and sometimes even after you find one, life can turn right around and spit in your face.

    • Dorothy: Listen, Daisy. I don't like being intimidated, I don't like being threatened, and frankly, kid, I don't like you! I'm not going to buy you anything, and I'm going to call your folks and let them know what you're doing. Then I'm going to call the School for Bad Girls, and they will come and pick you up, and put you in a sack, and take you away, and you will never eat ice cream or play jump rope again!
      Daisy: Get real, Grandma!

    • Blanche: Yes, that's all it was, just a silly mistake.
Daisy: In Sunshine Cadets we learn you have to pay for your mistakes. This one's gonna cost you a ten-speed Schwinn.

    • Blanche: I so admire your motto: "Spread it around."
      Dorothy: Sunshine. Spread sunshine around.

    • Sophia: Is someone sitting here?
      Alvin: Cataracts or glaucoma?
Sophia: I can see there's nobody sitting here, I was just trying to be nice.
      Alvin: If you say so.

    • Blanche: So that's when this saleman from men's sportswear walks clear across the store into ladies' petite and says, "Oh excuse me, miss, but I noticed you've been having a hard time deciding between the turquoise strapless and the flaming red backless. Well, personally I'd like to see you in the backless." And I said, "When?" And he said, "How about Saturday night?" And I said, "How about in your dreams, sleazo!" Can you believe the nerve of that guy?
Rose: What were you doing in ladies petite?

  • NOTES (7)

    • The episode won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Technical Direction/Electronic Camerawork/Video Control for a Series.

    • The background shot during the closing credits features Dorothy and Blanche on either side of Rose on the couch, discussing why she needs to give the teddy bear up.

    • Little red-haired Jenny Lewis, who played the adorable yet diabolic little girl in this episode, is perhaps best known for playing Shelley Long and Craig T. Nelson's young daughter Hannah in the 1989 classic film Troop Beverley Hills. Lewis did not continue acting beyond her childhood, but she did become a passionate musician, and while she is willing to discuss her former acting career with anyone who asks, she has admitted that she is "embarrassed" by her work as a child star.

    • As stated, The Golden Girls which started out filming at Sunset-Gower Studios, Stage 2 from 1985-1987, moves to Ren-Mar Studios, Stage 5 starting with this episode.

Interesting fact is, The Golden Girls started out at Sunset-Gower and moved to Ren-Mar, while its spin-off, Empty Nest, started out at Ren-Mar, and then moved to Sunset-Gower.

    • The Chinese vase is no longer by the front door. If you recall, Rose shot this vase in the first season episode, Break-In and then it was replaced by a new vase that was shown through the end of the 2nd season.

    • When Blanche asks Daisy to collect some things on Rose's bed, she walks through the archway and immediately to the right, which would be Sophia's room. Instead of the last door on the left, which was Rose's room.

    • Terry Hughes earned a 1988 Emmy nomination for his work on this episode.
