Sophia's Choice

Aired Unknown Apr 15, 1989 on NBC

Episode Recap

Blanche bursts into the kitchen where Dorothy and Rose are talking, excited with her news that she plans to get her breasts enlarged. Sophia comes in moments later, upset that her dear friend, Lillian, has been moved into a retirement home that makes even Shady Pines look like a resort. Dorothy doesn't believe that it can be that bad, until Sophia takes her along with her to scope it out. Dorothy admits that the facility is pretty bad, while Sophia schemes a plan to get Lillian out of there. In the meantime, Blanche gets all kinds of brochures on plastic surgery and which enlargements to use as models.

Sophia brings Rose with her as an accomplice to bust Lillian out of the nursing home. Under guise as prospective customers, they distract the attendants and take Lillian home. Unfortunately, Lillian needs a lot more care than any of them imagined, and when she gets confused and even breaks things, they realize that they'll have to take her back. Filing a complaint with the administrator results in nothing but frustration for Dorothy and Sophia, as they realize nothing will be done.

It appears as though Lillian is doomed to substandard care for the remainder of her days, until Blanche selflessly gives her would-be breast enhancement money towards a better facility for Lillian. In the final scene, the girls lament what will happen when there is only one of them left, to which Sophia replies, "Don't worry. I can take care of myself."
