Welcome to The Governor & J.J. guide at TV.com. One of the needs of any man in high political office is someone to organize social functions and serve as first lady. For Governor William Drinkwater, the chief executive of a small Midwestern state, and a widower, that some-one was his attractive perky 23-year-old daughter. Despite the problems caused by their generation gap, J.J. served her father as a charming and efficient first lady. Bright and opinionated, she was always willing to debate issues, and possessed the uncanny knack for getting her father into and out of political hot water. She also had a regular job as an assistant curator at a zoo. It may also explain her fondness for a stray basset hound that she brought into the family and named Guv. Around the executive mansion she sought and received assistance from the governor's secretary Maggie, his press secretary George, and the housekeeper Sara.moreless

The Governor and J.J is about William Drinkwater, the Governor of a mid-western state. He has become a widower, and must have a First Lady to carry out certain duties and functions. He turns to his young daughter Jennifer Jo, who works at the local zoo. What happens next is the classic young generation versus older generation, left versus right, and father versus daughter formula. The show was basically geared to the younger generation, so the young daughter almost always won. The Governor and his staff were just there to be sticks in the mud. Dan Dailey was fantastic as the Governor and Julie Sommars' was very nice as the unstoppable daughter. Dan Daily picked up a Golden Globe award for the show. The show did have is problems, but it remained a very nice lighthearted comedy and on CBS. I think it would play well today.
